The quality of commercial pet food has steadily declined. The sad impact is that dogs have developed strange new health problems that did not exist even twenty years ago.
Arthritis, digestive disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, skin and coat problems, allergies and behavioral problems are now common. The booming veterinary industry has been so explosive, in part, because the nutiritional building blocks animals need for strong, healthy bodies is not available in the food they eat.
DISTURBING FOOD FACTS
It's no secret that the ingredients used common dog foods are confusing. When the label says chicken, lamb or beef, what parts of these meats are used? Although the images of perfect ingredients and healthy dogs are widely used on packaging,

DRY KIBBLE MYTHS
Water is arguably the most important nutrient in your dog's body - especially when you consider that both humans and animals can live a lot longer without food than they can without water. Inadequate water consumption can lead to many disorders, from skin problems and constipation to urinary tract infections and kidney disease.
Most people think hard crunchy substances clean dogs' teeth - therefore they must feed dry kibble. However, kibble can draw valuable moisture from inside your dog (try soaking 1 cup of kibble in 3 cups of water and see what happens).
Veterinarians agree that dental hygiene is important, too. But, if dogs have buildup, plaque, tooth decay and bad breath why should we use the dry food that contributed to the problem as a toothbrush? Dogs eat food, drink water and breathe air. Only one of these can actually decay teeth and gums (except for the rare case where bad teeth are genetic.)

That's why they cost a small fraction of what real food costs for humans.
The USDA monitors meats entering the American food supply, and the processing of those meats through to the final food product consumed by humans. That's why it's a standard you can count on. If ingredients or the processing of those ingredients, are not suitable for human consumption it is inspected and rejected for human consumption by the USDA.
The USDA does not regulate dog food, unless the manufacturer creates true human grade product and voluntarily requests and complies with regulated supervision from the USDA.

HAPPY HEALTHY DOGS
For most of their lives, the dogs we love have been eating dry, cerealized, compacted leftovers from the meat packing industry. These leftovers include, including diseased and dying animals, recycled restaurant grease, rendered meats and meals.

Note: All commercial pet food manufacturers (including raw) must treat the food to kill any unwanted bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli. Myth 7: Changing pet food brands is hard on your dog’s digestion A healthy dog can eat different high quality foods regularly without problems. The most important things to avoid if changing regularly are ingredients which they may have a sensitivity to or ingredients that are significantly different in quantity, such as grains which in some foods can make up to 70% of the ingredients as opposed to less than 10% in others. Dogs thrive on nutrient variety so if you find a dry food that works well for you and them; stick with that but use a little less on some days and then give them fresh meat, fruits and vegetables for variety. Currently, my family owns two Weimaraners which are naturally slim dogs as part of their breed. However, the selective breeding to ensure high trainability could cause the “food obsession” mutation in Labradors to occur in other dog breeds as well. My heart would be broken, if more of my dogs were to suffer from obesity and its effects. Therefore, I feel concerned that studies on other dog breeds are not mentioned within the article. The absence of this information also creates confusion as I am unsure if genetics are responsible for obesity in all dogs or just the Labrador breed.…

The way the author uses such descriptive wording, such as how she describes the long gray veins in the meat that she spears with her fork (182), is a great way to make the reader have the vision of that hunk of meat in their minds. As a lifelong dog owner, Hodgman’s detailing of each brand she chooses and exactly what it looked and smelt like, brought back countless memories of opening dog food cans and that pungent smell hitting me, yuck. The essay just isn’t about a person’s decision to eat dog food, it’s true point is to inform the readers of just how false the advertising is for the food. What are meat by products? Why is soy beans used?…

As with complete dry foods, tinned foods and semi-moist foods can vary in quality. Again choose a good quality dog food with an easily digestible recipe and choose a food which is nutritionally complete. As before it is best to avoid changes in your dog's diet so if you find a product that works, stick to it. As far as home made raw meat diets are concerned, whilst they are natural and can taste good, it is very difficult to get the balance right, so you are probably better off choosing from one of the tried and tested commercial diets. Puppies in particular need the best possible diet whilst they are growing up, as even a slight imbalance may harm their development and growth.…
