Commercial Animal Testing

“The US Department of Agriculture reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while given no anesthesia for relief. ‘“1,395 primates; 5,996 rabbits; 33,652 guinea pigs; 48,015 hamsters.” (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?) These numbers are outrageous and these animals should not be treated in this manner. People who are using animals for testing and saying that they are using them for “scientific advances” are right in the fact that animal testing has helped us advance in medical science but are wrong in the treatment of animals; it’s inhumane and cruel. And although animal testing can help us advance in the medical field, it is cruel and inhumane because the animals that are being tested …show more content…
Rabbits are one of the animals that are treated the worst and, most commonly come to people’s minds when you think of animal testing. “Rabbits are “incapitated in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested.” Products such as cosmetics, shampoos etc.” (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?) It’s better to use human cells in a Petri dish. (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?) That way no animals or humans are harmed, and even though animal testing may seem like a good idea to avoid human testing it can be dangerous. For example, “The 1950s sleeping pill Thalidomide, which caused 10,000 babies to be born with severe deformities, was tested on animals prior to its commercial release. (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?) and “Animal tests on the arthritis drug Vioxx showed that it had a protective effect on the heart of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths before being pulled from the market.” (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?), making animal testing not 100% accurate. This can also be reversed, just because a drug fails an animal test doesn’t mean it won’t be helpful to humans, such as Aspirin, which is “…dangerous to some animals but is extremely helpful to humans.” (Should Animals Be used for Scientific or Commercial

Many methods have been developed to replace and reprieve animal testing. Three alternative testing options are; in vitro testing methods, in silico models, and studies done on human volunteers. (Alternatives to Testing.) The in vitro methods are tests that are used to diagnose diseases and monitor the status of patients using samples of cells, blood, or other tissues used from humans. In the article, Medical Testing on Animals is Cruel and Unnecessary, PETA said,”Even animals who are covered by the law can be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged-no procedures or experiments, regardless of how trivial or painful they may be, are prohibited by law.” Animals in experiments are not thought of as living beings that think and feel like we do, they are thought of as lab equipment that can be manipulated and thrown away at any time. Even though laws and welfare acts have been put in place to protect and care for animals being tested on, nothing can stop a scientist from performing a cruel experiment if they say it is in the name of science. Moreover, in the article, Animal Experimentation is Unnecessary, Sarah Rose A. Miller said,”If the animals are in a state of extreme distress from being trapped in tiny cages their whole lives with no stimuli and no room to move around, it can induce their various bodily systems to behave differently.” The animals are kept in filthy, barren cages, are socially deprived, and the only change in their day to day activity is when a scientist comes to take them for a new painful…

Heart attacks, organ failure, and lethal dysrhythmias are only a few of the dreadful reactions humans have suffered through on medication as a result of the inaccuracy of animal testing (Greek). Using animals for experiments is incredibly inaccurate due to the vast differences between animal and human biological makeup (Animal Aid). As a result, during past experiments, medications have had “totally the opposite effect” on animals than they did on humans (Animal Aid). Consequently, after already turning innocent animals into unhealthy victims while producing these products, humans themselves have also become oblivious victims to this research technique as they consume these unreliable items. Scientists spend many stressful hours conducting research through this unstable technique, while their outcomes are rarely advancements in health care.…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…

Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. This topic is important because the world we live in is as much an animal 's world as it is a human’s world and right now humans are discriminating and enslaving…
