Commentary On The Video 'Waiting For Superman'

Improved Essays
Waiting for superman The video titled waiting for superman triggered an immense emotion inside me. Like most individuals I have a fondness for innocent children which they all are until their environment alters them like the school institutions in this video. Evidently, such ill-functioning education system does not produce a better future generation. It gave me an outlook to the public education system that I was not aware of. Surprisingly, there are enough documentation on the public schools that are failing students but nobody takes the initiative to change what is wrong with it or support those who tries to. It is disturbing to learn that the so called teacher’s union protect those slackers

    1. Under the Texas state education system, public elementary schools and secondary schools are financed by both federal and local funds. The Establishment of the Texas Minimum Foundation School Program was made to guarantee a basic educational offering to each child in the state of Texas. In addition to this program, each school district was required to provide additional principal for education, based on an ad valorem tax on property within its jurisdiction. The State supplies about 80% of the funds, while the individual school districts are responsible for the other 20% through taxes.…

Elementary school is the cornerstone of a child’s development. Elementary school is where a child starts to understand the concepts of responsibility, determination, and success which manifest themselves in the guise of the end of year report card. The articles written by Erica Ehm and Cayla Hochberg convey two opposing sides of the recent TDSB union disputes. These articles are in disagreement about who is responsible for the lack of report cards given out to the children. I find the latter article by Cayla Hochberg to be the most convincing.…

In the documentary film, Waiting for Superman by Davis Guggenheim, it depicts the story of several kids and their families on a journey to find better education than what is being taught in the tattered public school system. Through this film it allowed us to see into the minds of the student, the parent, the teacher, and the officials leading the education system today; giving us an important viewpoint on the way schooling is to be further handled in America. This analysis will point out the two strongest parts of the documentary, followed by the disappointing weakness helping support its main idea that “education is the way out.” First, we look at the meaningful message that is given to the viewer, and what it outlines for them. Waiting for Superman’s call to action tackles one of the most important topics in the United States, “What do we need to do in order to improve our education system?”…

That same day of the teacher panel I discovered more Dreamers than I had in my entire four years of high school. Some of my friends most closest to me turned out to be in the same situation I am today. We see that the fear we have been taught from a young age does impact us greatly. Even the most closest people to me were afraid to talk about it because they thought they were going to be judged or looked different at. This year has been a true awakening for not only me but for the entire school.…

I agree with most of what Gatto, Davis, and Freakonomics said. Being a student who's spent most of his time in the system I personally think that we should start by getting more qualified teachers not someone who just knows the subject but to start that we need to figure out how we're gonna pay our teachers more so more qualified teachers will take the job for example with what Freakonomics said and that's to either reduce their taxes after 5 years or just increase their wage, next we need to start showing our teachers some more respect this might get more people into the field and make it feel that teaching is actually worth it. The actual system itself needs to be completely redone, we need to make it so the students actually have a voice…

In Waiting for ‘Superman’, the argument is that public school are not as successful to help children to get a proper education. The creators of the documentary made it through examples and facts of what our public schools are doing in terms of success rates and percentages for students and dropouts. The arguments are very compelling and convincing because they show the money spent on students for schools as compared to prisons and other taxpaying organizations. The public schools are failing and plummeting in success for today’s children. Waiting for ‘Superman’, uses studies and results from various researchers as well as interviews with young students and their parents as tools.…

    Education In Texas

Texas manages to simultaneously rank among the best and worst in the nation when it comes to education, but only because it excels in some fields and fails in others. An unfortunate side effect of this is that some political leaders in Texas think that budget cuts and funding in regards to education can be used to manipulate their power and political campaigns in order to forward their agenda. Education is a window to future careers; children and young adults should have access to educational services and/or financial aid no matter what income threshold their families come from. According to the tape "House Support for Senate Budget Unlikely" funding for schools were the center of contention between the two houses because the House wants to…

It opened my eyes to some of the ways our world was run throughout history and what is still taking place today, right under our noses! East Timor was under Portuguese control until 1975 when the Portuguese suddenly pulled out after centuries of colonization. The unexpected Portuguese withdrawal left the island vulnerable and just nine days after the Democratic Republic of East Timor was declared an independent nation, Indonesia invaded and seized it. Although Australia was the only country to officially recognize the annexation, Suharto's invasion was authorized by the…

In “Waiting for Superman” by Davis Guggenheim was very astonished to see how good teacher and bad teacher has a tremendous impact on student’s life and their education. This film was well made and charismatic where I learned a lot of new things. One of the things I learned from this film is how parents were always there to help and encourage their kids not to give up even though they have to face some obstacles and work hard to have the bright future. Therefore, parents were motivated that they were even ready to travel extra miles for their children education, especially when they knew they have a tiny chance of getting their children admission into that school. They could do anything for their children to achieve good education in good school.…

Barry was grateful for her teacher and what she did for her and the other students in the classroom. But as she was thinking she wondered what other kids went through that did not have quality teachers that went the extra mile for their students. While Barry was applauding the quality of teachers at her school Christina Fisanick implied that all teachers should be like Barry’s teachers. The quality of teachers is a big part of why some low-income students do better than others as Fisanick the editor of “Introduction to Has No Child Left Behind Been Good for Education? : At Issue”, says that every student needs a quality teacher in order to succeed in school.…

For almost two centuries, the United State’s public education system has taught and prepared today’s youth for their future and their career. However, in recent years it has come under scrutiny for failing to do just that, and as a result, more parents are opting to send their children to charter schools than ever before. These schools are government funded but are not a part of the school system in which the state it resides in. Instead, they are often managed by an independent school board and are held responsible for their students’ academic performance. In low income areas, the majority of charter schools offer a better education and better prepare students for college than the public schools surrounding them.…

It also makes me wonder why there has not been any positive change in the education system of the U.S. It appears to be common knowledge on the ways the education powerhouses became so successful, but there seems to be little effort on the behalf of the U.S to emulate these countries. It seems like the U.S does not want to take all the steps other countries have taken to revamp their education system. Based on information from this book, leaders in education need to view the purpose and function of education differently, and then try to implement education reform strategies. Until there is a mindset change, I truly believe the education system in the U.S could never be as successful as other countries.…

Preschool’s Role in the Development of Literacy Merriam-Webster (2011) defines literacy as the ability to read and write. Many things influence one’s level of literacy. I often wonder why some students are better in school than others. Some students really struggle to achieve average grades while other students seem to excel with little effort. I was always encouraged to read and write by my parents and teachers as a way to improve my literacy.…

In regards to the film, The Freedom Writers, it took one person, in this case, a teacher, Erin Gruwell, to stand up to the bureaucracy of the school system and provide students with respect, trust and hope. Though others feel students like the one in classroom 203 should be punished than rewarded. The result of punishing them does not work. Multimillionaire Eugene Lang returned to his old school which was located in a poor neighborhood, he gave the students hope and offered to pay for the college education for anyone who stayed in school and graduated. He also gave the community the support needed for students to do well in school, like tutoring and career counseling.…
