Commentary On The Film 'Business Of Being Born'

Improved Essays
The first filmed I watched was, “Business of Being Born”. Right from the beginning I was taken in by the film. Midwives have always been a topic I was interested in so this whole film was right up my alley. I was really surprised at the number of caesarian sections in the United States. It’s rather unfortunately that time is more important often then giving the mother the type of birth she wants. I feel now a days midwives are not very common or if you use a midwife the family is considered an outcast or old fashion. The film compared several forms of birth from natural to epidurals, and Cesarean sections. However, after watching the film I love the idea of a midwife. All the families had such a close bond with the midwife. The midwife was

The article, The Score by Atul Gawande, illustrated the history of pregnancy deliveries with the article profiling Elizabeth Rourke and her journey of giving birth to her daughter. The Score is an article where I acquired knowledge from a topic that I knew very little about. For example, the process of how women are in labor and how long they must wait until they are “in labor.” In addition, how long they must wait until their contractions are in a certain pace, “the nurse asked if the contractions were five minutes apart and lasted more than a minute. No.…

Ina May Gaskin on Birth Matters: A Midwife's Manifesta Reflection Ina May Gaskin talks about the birth matters that how the natural childbirths are far more worthy than the medicalization processes. She takes apart the technologies used for the labor, such as inductions or C-section and others. She says that many people argue that technology is better than the nature. More importance is given to the technology instead of nature. However, let’s consider some law of nature that anything which is natural can cause less complications compared to the complications caused by the technology.…

In an essay titled “Sage Femme” the author Samantha Tengelitsch uses many rhetorical strategies such as repetition, contrast, imagery, narrative and certain appeals to develop her argument. Tengelitsch use repetition by writing “my children slept soundly, the dog took little notice” several times throughout her essay which helps emphasize the ease of home birth. The description of the room she gave birth in creates imagery and establishes a peaceful visualization for her audience and illustrates her perspective. The author also uses contrast by displaying the negative aspects of giving birth in a hospital compared to giving birth at home.…

For my review, I chose to watch a movie called “Raising Arizona” directed by Joel Coen with his brother Ethan Coen. It was made in 1987 and some of the other movies made by Joel Coen are “Unbroken” “Barton Fink” and “True Grit”. Some of the ideas he conveys are desperation, love, happiness and how they thought having a baby would change them and their situation. When they try to conceive and baby it turns out Edwina or Ed can’t have a baby. So she and her husband H.I. see on the news that a famous couple in the area have quintuplets.…

    Pros Of Being A Midwife

    • 290 Words
    • 2 Pages

Midwifery embraces the reproductive rights of women and instead of limiting the decisions that mothers should be able to make when it comes to their birthing experience, they open up the doors to many options available to the mother without the use of medical interventions. Unlike doctors in hospitals, midwives provide extensive one-on-one health care education and counseling, as well as engage in shared decision-making with their clients and patients. The decision to determine when, where and how a child is brought into this world is not one that many mothers get to experience unless a midwife is chosen due to the lack of knowledge of women’s rights. Childbearing women frequently are not aware of their legal right to make health care choices…

The resurgence of Indigenous birthing traditions and midwife practises encourages a positive step in women taking charge of their bodies and re-connecting to both the cultural and spiritual aspects of birthing. The connection made through Indigenous methods of birthing opens the child and mother to returning to ceremonies and allows fewer traumas to be experienced in birthing. Following traditional Indigenous teachings gives a positive experience to not only mother’s but their babies; “By living our teachings and living our sovereignty we will ensure a healthy first environment for our babies inside of our women” (Simpson, Pp.32, 2007). The women who are reconnecting to birthing are regaining their oral history and carrying and passing their…

The movie “Boyhood” represents a seemingly perfect depiction of child development in a boy from ages 6 to 18. This movie is very relatable to viewers because the experiences of both Mason and his sister Stephanie are experiences every child faces from childhood to adolescence. Over the course of the movie you are able to analyze normative development in several different aspects of Mason’s life, as well as some non-normative events. More importantly, viewers are able to take notice on the effects of family and home relationships on development. Mason, the main character, experiences several broken families throughout the movie and does not have a stable family background which undoubtedly plays a key role in his development.…

I feel that the United States has over-medicalized pregnancy and childbirth. It seems that most women living in the states don’t know there is a choice when it comes to birthing, this was also true for all my pregnancies. Ricki Lake mentions in her documentary, The Business of Being Born, that she had no idea there was anything different than having a baby in a hospital. Just like Ricki Lake, I too didn’t know there was any other choice. I was told the hospital was the only safe option and real legal way to have a child.…

I was 27 years old when I had my daughter Sara on Sept. 8 1998. I came from Sicily that I was four months pregnant. I broke the water around 3:15 AM, woke up my husband and took a quick shower, I had no pain yet. We went to the Paradise Valley hospital and the pain started feeling quick and strong, I was pacing, my mother in law told me about the epidural and advised not to ask for it, for she thought was…
