Commentary On The Documentary 'Supersize Me'

Consumer vs Corporation I recently watched the documentary “Supersize Me” where a man eats nothing but McDonalds for thirty straight days to show what the food at the restaurant can do to someone’s body. While his argument was directed at the company, saying they pressure people into eating food they know is not healthy for consumption. He uses hard facts as well as professional opinions to tell the audience how damaging the food is. While I believe it’s both the consumers responsibility to eat McDonalds and other fast foods reasonably as well as the companies to not advertise to children. Throughout the film, Morgan Spurlock, consults doctors to record his progress. They talk about high cholesterol and how all the additives and preservatives affected his liver and a heart function. When walking around the cafeteria he sees kids buy only junk food, even though he also shows that the school meals themselves are not that nutritious, which he chalks up to the fact that food companies are teaching children that junk foods are better than healthy foods. All fast food restaurants have targeted audiences when it comes to their ads. They even have a kids menu and use the lure of exclusive toys to get kids to want to eat their food. These happy meals create lasting memories of happiness and good meals to keep them coming back and bring their children back later to keep the cycle going. Using focus groups of young kids, he shows them pictures of current leaders and religious icons. None of the kids know who they are but when shown Ronald McDonald each kid knows. They constantly hear his name and see his face leading them to the meals. This starts a bad habit of children going to the restaurant. Companies should not advertise to young kids, only adults who have the capability if taking their kids or
