Commentary On The Book 'True Legend' By Mike Lupica

Improved Essays
The book that I have been reading is True Legend by Mike Lupica. This book is about a kid named Drew “True” Robinson who is an insanely good basketball player. He’s so good that he has made it into the sportscenter top ten plays. He lived in New York up to his Sophomore year in highschool when a extremely rich guy named Seth Gilbert. He completely changed Drew’s life by helping out financially and basically becoming a second parent. Seth Gilbert and a bunch of his rich friends created the school that Drew attends, Oakley Academy. Seth Green wanted to make a good school for kids to go to, but was more interested in creating one of the top basketball programs in the country.

Drew is a shoe in to make the NBA, but the question is whether or not his grades can hold up in high school. Drew is very talented in many categories, but academics is not one of them. It is a surprise when Drew even shows up to a class. This, to me, is a very stupid thing to do. If you are talented enough to go pro in a sport you should not risk that chance, and that is what Drew is doing. If I were in Drew’s shoes I would try my absolute best in every class. I would need something to do when retire right?

Academic Argument To be considered a top recruit you don’t even have to display your intelligence all you need to display is the athletic ability that you have obtained. The film “Hoop Dreams” shows the two main characters being pursued by college coaches because of what they could potentially bring to the team not what they can bring to the school. The only time education was important to Arthur and William was when their high school coach or counselor informed them that they had to reach a set score to be able to be recruited and attend the high-powered school. School was never the focus of the film because it only showed them in school for approximately two minutes it primarily took place at their homes or on the court during a game. The…

Should College Athletes Get Paid “As a professional athlete a lot is going to be said about you, but I just try to move forward and try to achieve my goals”-(LeBron James). “In college I never realized the opportunities available to a pro athlete. I’ve been given the chance to meet all kinds of people, to travel and expand my financial capabilities, to get ideas and learn about life, to create a world apart from basketball”-(Michael Jordan). The issue about college athletes playing sports is that they don’t get paid for the hard work that they do playing. Like LeBron said once you get into the professional sports like basketball, football, soccer, and baseball you’re gonna get people talking trash about you.…

Over the years, statistics have shown that NBA players who go to college tend to avoid bankruptcy just as frequently as those who go straight to the NBA from high school. [MC(1)] Along with this, findings also show that players should have to go through at least two years of college. The reasoning behind this is so that the players are intelligent enough to take care of their money. These two years of college could perhaps allow these athletes to make smart, sound choices with their life and money, in order to better themselves for the future.[MC(2] Unless they are truly gifted, can make an NBA team better without having to go to college, and are friends with people who can help them take care of their money and keep them away from all of the bad things that come along with being a star/well-known athlete, it is likely that these athlete’s financial status will decline.…

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson was a brilliant, enticing read. It is definitely the most interesting, multi-layered vampire story I have ever read. It provided the genre with such unique and authentic qualities, allowing Matheson to impregnate a unique believability of these vampires into my mind. Robert Neville, the protagonist of the novel, is the only survivor of a devastating pandemic which plagued the rest of the population with a form of vampirism. Neville spends much of his days barricading his house from these vampires, and killing them.…
