Commentary On The Book 'The Purpose Of Soma'

Decent Essays
The purpose of soma is to help people deal with or forget about their problems. I'm assuming that soma is addicting because of how some characters in the story react when they are deprived of it. Soma is also used as part of their conditioning. It helps keep them from reacting in ways they were conditioned not to. Since they are normal human emotions it must be hard to condition all of it out so that is why soma was created. They must have run into some problems in the past that inspired the creation of the pill. Soma in the book is what we would probably consider an Illegal drug here. It sort of reminds me of marijuana but in tablet form or other THC's. The reason being is because of the euphoria marijuana makes you feel. In the book

Cultural Change and Adaptation Both Thomas Sowell and Michael Schwalbe think cultural change and adaptation are necessary to the social world but their views are different. Sowell, has conservative views while Schwalbe views lie on the liberal side. Sowell views are cut and dried (everyone should be treated equally), whereas Schwalbe views seem to be more flexible taking the situation into account (everyone should be sociologically mindful). This drug is produced to keep the people content and distracted from events and emotions that can cause disorder and inconvenience. Lenina consumes Soma so “she could now sit, serenely not listening ,thinking of nothing at all” (Huxley 101). Soma completely numbed her mind and body from her surroundings. The effect of Soma distracting someone completely from the situation at hand is a way the World State continues to keep everyone in a calm, stable state. The government relies on this form of stability so much that they promote and insist on taking Soma for every day use.…

Gene crossover, the exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes, can be observed in many different instances with the help of model organisms. Many scientists observe gene crossover to better comprehend the heritability patterns of unrelated genes (Chen and Olive, 1965). In the case of this experiment, the use of Sodaria allowed students to observe the inheritance pattern of two different phenotypes when crossed in a a petri dish (Saleem, et al., 2001). Sordaria, a microfungi commonly found in feces of herbivores, was the subject of this study. Using Sodaria, students were able to observe random genetic crossing due to a mutation that the test subject underwent many years ago that only allows it to mate via sexual reproduction.…

As William Shakespeare says, “We know what we are, but not what we may be” (BrainyQuote). Often times in society, people allow material possessions inhibit their ability to become what they are capable of being; accepting who they are currently. Illegal and legal substances such as drugs cause people to lack free thinking and cause addictive behaviors that can lead people to not seek opportunities to succeed. The influence of others pushes people to take part in the use of things like drugs in order to appear normal in society. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the government pushes the drug Soma as a replacement of religion and brainwashing tool inhibiting people’s ability to think freely and lack individuality, as a way to maintain supremacy and power over the people.…

In the novel “Brave New World” written by Aldous Huxley, there are many political and social issues that are addressed. The reason that these issues occur in the novel is because Huxley wants to demonstrate how society in the 1930’s is flawed and corrupt. He uses satire to illustrate what society is doing wrong and relates the novel to the real world. In the novel, there are many topics that Huxley covers through the use of irony, motif, and allusion. These topics include moral and cultural decay, relationships, drug dependency, and brainwashing.…
