This book tells a story about a African American women in the 1940’s. It tells about her family and how WW2 is happening. Her brother leaves to join the army but in those days if a African American man was left behind no one would go back for him. The main character’s name is Ida Mae, when her father was still around he taught her how to fly is plane. She talks about it multiple times saying “Just remembering my first time in a pane, in my daddy’s old curtiss JN-4 “Jenny,” I get goose bumps.” (Smith 3). She loved to fly but when the war broke out she no longer could because the government rationed everything that they got including gas. The way the author tells about the characters I felt like I was apart of the WASP program. Ida Mae becomes an amazing women who fought for her country and in the end finds herself, she truly becomes Flygirl.
