Alex R. Hour 1 When people think child soldiers they think of kids having their innocence ripped away from them by the horrors of war. Now that is the case most of the time but today where looking at the demographic of kids who choose to join these awful groups almost like being inducted into a religion they are brainwashed with the idea that their cause is the only right cause. I'm not saying that it's their fault that they are being taught these lies but it is their fault that they joined in the first place with the intent of following this idea. I believe that kids like Ibrahim should be treated as criminals First off in the article “Witness: A Child Soldier’s Darfur Confession – ‘I shot her. She is dead.’”…

Even though Sierra Leone is more than 9,100 km away from Somalia, the two countries face similar problems of poverty and civil warfare brought on by severely limited natural resources, dramatically low wages, and environmental hardship. Throughout the arid continent, there is a sinister demand for child soldiers as they are recruited by groups which both take part in the raiding of peaceful civilizations with families. As Ishmael Beah described in his memoir A Long Way Gone, the unavoidable choice given to a great number of African children is to either kill and take or forfeit what you have and perish. However, Beah also states with assurance, “ . . . children have the resilience to outlive their sufferings, if given a chance.”…

Uganda has had a unique experience with child soldiers and recruitment in the past. In particular, Uganda has struggled to disperse and suppress the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) founded from the “Holy Spirit Movement” in 1986 with the intention of bringing down the Ugandan government. This army uses forced child recruitment to fill its ranks, and become a formidable force. The Ugandan Army, with support from the international community, has condemned the actions of the LRA and actively defended itself and its people. Uganda has had to engage in bloody armed conflict against the LRA on Uganda’s own soil from 1986 to 2006.…
