I believe O'Conner message was deeper than do not judge a book by its cover. However, I do believe that message was in some way shown; such as when Hulga assumed that she could take advantage of Manley because her level of intellect was far superior than his. If Hulga would've been better off approaching him with the same apprehension she would have approached any other man the results would have not been as heart wreaking as they were. The book, in my opinion, was about the handicaps of the soul and mind. Manley handicap soul allowed him to feel entitled to something that did not belong to him, regardless of who suffers. Hulga handicapped mind made her think she could manipulate a man to fit her
