Several parts within the book stood out to myself, but one in particular was the section regarding “Coping with burnout”. Paul Loeb (1999) explains that “Opening ourselves up to take on the troubles of the world can leave us emotionally vulnerable” (p. 310). The social work profession can be one that many individuals struggle with since they are dealing with clients one on one. These clients could have a range of concerns such as drug and alcohol abuse, to abuse that social workers will be working on. The amount of pressure to “fix” each client that is seen causes the social worker to take on more than they can handle.
