I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…
Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…
For some, work is strictly for earning that paycheck that keeps them alive and for this reason some may find their work uninteresting and nearly lifeless. After their shift they assuage their sorrow resulting from the tedious…
This weeks reading, Walking This Path Together by Kundouqk and Qwel’shi’yah’maht, was very insightful to the Anti-Oppressive practises across Canada. I appreciated the in depth detail into indigenous studies, and could easily see the transition to all cultures. I was taken by the phrase, “best interest of the child”, as I have heard this phrase many times over my lifetime. (p. 40) The need to protect children has been thrust to the forefront of the country as if a necessity, but rarely is the child’s family or community been considered.…
Compassion fatigue (CF) is an extremely common side effect in helping professions, especially social work. CF can occur after social workers have experienced so many traumatized clients’ stories that they have a reduced empathetic reaction and reduced capacity for caring and effective treatment. Inexperienced social workers are often at a great risk for experiencing CF due to their empathetic and motivated nature to help others (Harr & Moore, 2011). Once social workers have experienced CF, they often suffer from negative changes in both their personal and professional lives. This may especially affect the social work practice as clinicians can begin contributing to a negative work environment by constantly criticizing or making negative…
CYC is one of the most difficult professions in the human services field (Krueger, 2002). Within the industry, burnout is becoming a serious issue. The burnout CYC practitioners face not only impacts them, but also affects both the organization and clientele. This literature review will mainly focus on various methods of burnout and its impacts on CYC practitioners, clients, and organization. It will also look into different prevention strategies that can be used to reduce burnout.…
#1 A. Social work is a value based practice and employs a two pronged approach. The juggling act, as it were, in social work is a 100 year old debate exploring if the goal of social work is that of seeking social reform or focusing on treating the individual. (Haynes, 1998) All the while seeking to do what is “good and desirable” (Bisman, C., 2004)…
Many social workers reach a point in their career in which they become “burnout.” During this phase social workers are overwhelmed with the caseloads assigned to them resulting in stress, anxiety, depression and self-neglect. A social worker needs to realize this problem and engage in self-care to help them deal with the stressor of their employment. It is better to be straightforward and not keep a child in suspense. Andy quickly learned not to develop a trusting relationship with any social worker.…
As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
Ethical Issues When Social Workers Specialize in Addictions Social workers that specialize in addictions can face many ethical issues while trying to help their client achieve sobriety. A social worker needs to focus on human relations, trust building, allowing the client to make independent decisions, and to show an acceptance and respect for the client regardless of the situation. One ethical issue is if a woman is seeking help for substance abuse and she discloses that she is pregnant.…
Being a social worker is often a challenging, yet rewarding career. Social workers are responsible for helping individuals, families, and groups of people to cope with problems they’re facing to improve their patients’ lives. Social workers are also trained caseworkers in social service agencies who perform several functions which they use different components of the practice framework, the theoretical underpinnings to in order to build helping relationships. After interviewing a caseworker in a specific social agency there were advantages and disadvantages of methods along with challenges encountered in working in that specific agency. With all of these the functions, roles and responsibilities of a caseworker is what helps any agency to uphold…
Often, they chose not to. I realized that I could not solve their problems, I could only be ready with a helping hand for them to chose to receive help. Social workers experience mental and physical exhaustion as they deal with difficult situations, but they can see small glimpses of success when clients choose to help…
My personal understanding of the social work profession is quite vast. Social workers are making a difference in people 's lives by helping people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. The most important aspect for social workers in my opinion is to promote positive change. We help provide opportunities and resources for children, adults, elderly and families that weren’t there before. Social workers do what they can to assist individuals, but they also understand that the individual needs to be willing to make changes.…
a. In looking back over the courses you’ve taken thus far, what are the key themes and lessons that you feel will be the most prominent in your mind as you enter the field of social work? This could be a concrete tool or practice, or perhaps a theme or way of thought. As I reflect back on the courses that I have taken thus far, I have learned many great themes and lessons that will be prominent in my mind as enter the field of social work. The most valuable lesson I have learned is who and what should guide my work with individuals from such vulnerable populations.…
Understanding of the social work profession To many, the primary mission of the profession of social work is enhancing the needs of those that are considered vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. However, my understanding of the social work profession is helping someone to make positive changes in his or her life that result in a better quality of life. This is also true when promoting the wellbeing of the community in a social context.…
