It became evident that while Athena was confident in reading, writing and ordering numbers up to and beyond the thousands, which aligns with the Year 4 ‘Number and Place Value’ content descriptor in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (ACMNA072), her lack of understanding about place value within a base-ten system meant that she could not interpret numbers comfortably in order to solve problems to align with (ACMNA073) (ACARA, 2016). While she knows the procedures for adding and subtracting numbers that bridge decades and hundreds and can show correct working out on paper, her mental strategies regarding place value needed practice. It was determined that activities in which manipulatives could support the mental strategies needed could help, as suggested by Burns (2004). The intention was to segue into this first by revising her understanding of two digit numbers and developing sense of number…

John Dewey and Maria Montessori both agreed on the principles of effective education. That is: learning is not from receiving information, children themselves form images by working with materials, learning is like going through life—knowledge earned from working with materials is a physical and psychological change, and learning is through interactions with environment. Even though Montessori was focusing on individual’s skills and development, Dewey was concentrated on group approaches. Both human experiments on education were able to prove that students learn better working with materials on hands, rather than teachers lecturing their knowledge on students.…

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…
