Commedia dell’Arte, which is also known as ‘Italian comedy’, was a form of theatrical presentation that was humorous. Performers would wear masks with exaggerated facial features to draw extra attention to their physical skills, and perform to all social classes all around Europe. Language was no barrier as they usually mimed. Although their roots can be traced to as far back as the Ancient Greeks, Commedia dell’arte originally started in the streets and market places of Italy between the 14th and the 16th century. The Italian street performers eventually teamed up mid-1500’s and travelled together which eventually led to Commedia dell’Arte to be established as a genre.
