Case Study 1 Technology’s impact on society continues to grow every year. The latest and greatest new gadgets allow us to communicate at speeds unlike the human race has ever seen. One could be across the world, and you could live video chat with that person in real time. That is something once seen in fiction cartoons that people believed would never be true. With that, it would seem there are no negative repercussions and that everyone would be much more communicative than before. Well, time and time again, that proves itself to be untrue. In this case study, for example, Kyle was slacking on his role in the group and the members could not reach him. When asked about it, an excuse is given about deleted messages

The excuses he made about the communication problems could have been true; however, if all of the meetings took place in the conference room then this problem may have never occurred. People are unpredictable sometimes, so the group did what they had to do and covered Kyle’s missing pieces. This is the upside of having a good group and using the various communication methods. The downside, being that Kyle was unreliable even with many means of communication. Again, this could have been because of the virtual team environment, but there is not enough information to prove so. However, the fact that he gave the classic, “my dog ate my homework” type of excuse leads me to believe that he procrastinated and let the team down. This would leave less to chance, and allow all of us to hold each other accountable. Emotions, as mentioned earlier, would be more present if meeting face-to-face consistently. Each time the group met, I believe it would be less likely each time for one of the members to slack on their

Chapter 1 was an interesting read. It exemplified in depth on how technology has shaped our society drastically. The chapter explained how technology is developed and applied so we can do things not otherwise possible or so that we can do them cheaper, faster and more easier. The capacity of human beings to employ technologies sets us apart from other creatures. To be sure beavers build dams, otters crack open shellfish with rocks and chimpanzees use sticks to extract termites from their nest.…

Have you ever wondered about the advancements of technology and how as technology progresses and gets better, will society do the opposite and get worse? Whether it's good or bad, technology is taking over every part of society. In the article “Meet Your iBrain” by Gary Small and GiGi Vorgan, they talk about how technology is “alternating our brain”, and how it is also changing the way “we feel and behave,” especially our social skills. In this paper, I will discuss two ways that technology affects society, both positively and negatively. The first topic I will discuss is a negative side of technology, which is how technology could be affecting our social skills, ability to think clearly and concentrate, and make it harder for us to focus on…

For example, suppose a genius programmer discovers a better way to develop a section of a project, but does not vocalize the changes. The team may be working towards a goal that is no longer achievable or valuable because of the undisclosed changes. Or the genius programmer may need to reverse the changes due to lack of cohesion with the current goals. From a more recent publication, Software Engineering: A Practitioners Approach, Roger S. Pressman touches on the importance of communication, “… it is critically important to communicate and collaborate with the customer (and other stakeholders)” (Pressman 17).…

There were many barriers that made the communication dynamic terrible. One barrier was opposing viewpoints on how to do things in a certain way. Another barrier was egos making people think they were better than the other so they did not have to listen. The last barrier to effective communication that I noticed was the lateness and lack of effort from the members. In the end, these barriers caused a miscommunication and got a firefighter seriously hurt during an emergency call due to faulty…

Presenting information in front of an audience has never been my strong suit, but working with others towards a common goal has always been fairly easy to me. Although I consider working with other people fairly easy it doesn’t mean that there are no complications when trying to obtain our goal. Working in groups is something that I am familiar with, whether it is an academic group or an athletic team. According to the book Communicating in Groups Applications and Skills, the authors Katherine Adams and Gloria Galanes states that, “A group is three or more individuals who have a common purpose, interact with each other, influence each other and are interdependent” (Adams & Galanes, 2006). Almost all the groups I have participated in have presented…
