The Coming of Old Age
(An analysis of the messages from Ulysses) “Since it is becoming difficult for the old woman to manage on her own” (Fisher). What is the prior quote implying about old age? How does one feel about the aging process, does it dramatically change one’s outlook on life? In Ulysses by Alfred Lord, Tennyson is a dramatic monologue that tells of Ulysses late life, when the great King of Ithaca and leader of the Trojan war is very old. A twist on a old saying that makes Ulysses’ point clear, an individual can still teach an old dog tricks. Might be a bit more time consuming and have a higher level of difficulty but can be done. This same kind of concept is applicable to human beings. As declared in Ulysses, “To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought” (Tennyson 972 lines 31 & 32). The prior quote explains that one should never feel that they should stop seeking knowledge, never stop learning. For an individual can never be quenched with enough knowledge to last them a lifetime. Also, no one can say that they know “everything”; thus, one can never be finished learning in life. As demonstrated in the following quote, “To be a matter of great use and essence in studying” (Krapp). By studying one learns, and the desire to learn more and seek more knowledge must never end for an individual who wants to acquire all they can from life. Once an individual is knowledgeable they can help others and be useful. Also, the continual seeking of knowledge sparks neurons in the brain and will help keep an aging individuals mind busy and younger for a longer period of time, than an individual who doesn't engage themselves in any mental strain. Importantly, studying, learning and furthering oneselves in knowledge will allow an individual to gain social

A wise man by the name of Mortimer Alder once said, “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.” We never outgrow the ability to learn, so we should continue to strive to learn something new daily. During the past semester while taking Composition II, I learned a myriad of things that are going to help me in my future such as how to properly cite in MLA format, how to not plagiarize, and how to become more organized. Before this class, I never knew the right way to write MLA format papers or cite. However, during this class I learned what information needed to be included in the citations as well as the format the citation had to be in.…

The strongest person in the world might be able to tackle any physical obstacle, but mental stress can be much more difficult. The nuance with mental stress is that different environments affect people in different ways, and in different magnitudes. Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover”, Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel”, and Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context”, all describe scenarios with environments that are either stressful and negative, or relaxed and positive. An individual’s identity is minimally impacted in positive environments and drastically affected in negative environments.…

This goes back to Franklin’s words that “the doors of wisdom are never shut.” If we were to simply stop studying and reading books or exposing ourselves to the outside world, the doors of wisdom would be shut and we would not make any advancements in our lives or minds. One example that refers to both the slogan and the aphorism is the fact that we need to live a healthy life and eat right in order to stay active and stay healthy, and often survive. It is “Impossible” to be healthy if we eat junk food and sit on the couch 24/7. This will often affect our brains growth because our brain needs proper nutrients and training in order to grow.…

Lisa Blackwell, Gad Saad, and Carol Dweck all argue, respectively, that intelligence is not fixed, that our attributes are affected by both our genes and by our experiences. Most people say a child can be born “smart” or “dumb”, but how is that when they are new to everything and they’re still learning. Therefore, there is no such thing as a fixed intelligence because we learn something new every day. We can grow our intelligence as longest we practice the strategies.…

In his essay, “Encouraging Learning,” Hsun Tzu presents many ideas that are associated with learning. He talks about how learning is a never-ending process and that people are constantly learning up until they die. Tzu discussed the fact that it is impossible for a man to become educated alone and must be with others in order to learn. He also talked about the idea that a man’s education helps to shape his virtues when he said, “The learning of the gentleman enters his ear, clings to his mind, spreads through his four limbs, and manifests itself in his actions.” (Jacobus 550).…

PHONICS FOR CHILDREN Definition: Phonics is the systemic teaching of the sounds conveyed by letters and groups of letters, and includes teaching children to combine and blend these to read or write words. It is important because • The majority of the information conveyed by letters concern sounds • Letters tell us more information than any other source • We can’t read fluently until we read accurately • Once we have learned we can store in our memory and retrieve it more quickly • Almost all weak readers have difficulty in blending sounds from letters to make words. In Siddhartha, the title character not only learns how he learns best, through his own discovery and self-reflection, but that the desire to learn comes from within. Essentially, his journey leads to the conclusion that the desire to learn is a self-driven force, but in order to gain true wisdom you must shed yourself and gain a new perspective. This revelation came to me during middle school, when I craved intellectual stimulation, but was only able to grow when I adapted other’s perspectives. I was like Siddhartha, with an eternal thirst for knowledge, before I realized that the secret to powerful education lay in how I let others affect me. If I just sought out intellect, like a young Siddhartha, I would be left feeling bitter…

Among all the Greeks, the king of Ithaca was known as one of the best and his legend is told world wide. This fierce warrior stormed the beaches of Troy with sword and shield, and ultimately burned the supposedly impenetrable city to the ground. This man from Ithaca is nothing short of a hero to the Greeks, but his time here on earth was far from perfect nor ultimately fulfilling.…

The most common—but not the only—hypothesis about the instructional relevance of learning styles is the meshing hypothesis, according to which instruction is best provided in a format that matches the preferences of the learner (e.g., for a ‘‘visual learner,’’ emphasizing visual presentation of information). (Pashler et al., 2009) Learning is a very unique concept as in one regard some people might refer to learning as a means of retaining knowledge while others might refer to learning as a means of understanding reality (Schmeck, 1988). But by definition learning is a process through which individuals acquire, assimilate new knowledge, and behaviour changes. This includes cognitive and affective components as well as attitude.…
