The main problem that started everything in The Separate Peace is jealousy. Finny and Gene are complete opposites. Gene is a prodigy in academics while Finny is a natural born athlete. Gene is extremely jealous of Finny and wants to see him fail at least once. When Elwin Leper Lepellier joins the Super Suicide Society, Gene and Finny needs to make another jump off the tree to make Leper an official member. When Finny and Gene climb up the tree, Gene shakes the branch right before Finny jumps causing him to fall and shatter his leg. This was the first time Finny had been exposed to the real world. He had never seen anything more evil outside of Devon school. This saddens Finny causing him to run down the stairs and stumble and fracture his leg. He is then taken to the infirmary where he rekindles with Gene. The next morning during a bone setting a piece of bone marrow escapes into his blood and stops his heart. His death took away all of Genes negative emotions and he dies in peace.
Gene in the end let go of all his negative emotions and lived a normal life after the war. These three examples are the main themes of betrayal. I think this could have all been prevented if Gene told the truth in the infirmary or even earlier in the tree incident.
