Coming into Mrs. Bertachi-love’s 205 Business Communication class the one thing I won’t forget is the overpowering feeling of frighten obtained on the very first day. Though I knew this was going to be all new material to me, I panicked when she stated “This in no ordinary English class; we will not be writing the usual block format essays here, this is a class in which I will prepare you for your future.” I ever knew was how to write essays, 5 page, 10page, 15 and even 20 page reports, but what I feared the most was myself. However, I took a step back, took three long breaths and thought to myself, “MY future is MY future, and only I can control it” and with that I began my long progression process.
Starting off I knew absolutely nothing

One of the final assignments for Bertachi-love’s 205 Business Communication, was to as a group of four create a formal report, otherwise known as a business proposal. My group contained the usual group members: the lead who no one voted as lead, the one member who does little to no work, and the two members that follow along. Though towards the end we build upon each other’s work, in the beginning the “team” did not feel like a team at all. Aanchal who took the dominant role of lead, had placed herself in charge of a more supervisorial role. She would plan group meeting around all of our schedules but would end up changing them at short notice to fit her schedule. Apart from that during meetings she would ascribe both me and Shenna, another team member of our, assignments and would then over look them like a C.E.O. However, when asked if she could please show her work she would either, change the subject, say she produced it but would not show it or, come up with an excuse. Real work was not produced by her until I created the rough outline to her finance page, which she then tweaked around and called her own. Moving on I think it is only fair I mention that our last group member Kevin, did little to now work. Not only did he hardly show up to meeting, but he was only in charge of producing the basic pages, which even after he was done needed to be fixed. Though I believe one of our strongest members was Shenna, I must mention that towards the last week we did all come together as a team to help shape and finish each other’s work. Though some did do more work than others, I believe I learned of the difficulty group work upholds, yet at the same time learned to overcome group differences and try to work with what we have to create a magnificent project over

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

A young freshman in college is anxiously checking her schedule for her first semester. She examines her paper carefully and sees she is taking English 112. She stopped and asked herself why she would take English 112? She ponders for a reason to take this writing class after she already took at least four English classes in her high school years, plus English 111. She felt she already ‘knew’ how to write.…

I was used to high school classes, so would I transition into college smoothly? Little did I know, as soon as I sat down in my tiny college desk, I was about to be relieved. My teacher, Gale, changed my entire viewpoint on English 1102 but also college. Gale was excited from the beginning, and soon this infected me to be excited about the class, writing, and college. It was not until later weeks that I could make a personal connection with the writing process that Gale…

During and after the group project I got a better understanding of NAVAL and a better understanding of my group. For example, Lexi is the leader of the group and Camille is the worker bee meaning that she is the one to go to for the information about the presentation. There were many high points in the group such as when we completed are power point early and when we researched the information. I had a blast working with them. A low point was when the video couldn’t load and we had to start from scratch again.…

My Reflection of this Semester Throughout this semester I was approached with several challenging objectives that caused me to think critically while writing. Writing has never been a strong point of mine. When I came to The University of Alabama, I was apprehensive that I did not acquire the necessary skills to take a college English class. Auspiciously, I feel that I have met the desirable course outcomes and expanded my knowledge on writing.…

You could say we went through the “forming” and “storming” stages of group work that semester. Second semester, after we had an opportunity to analyze each other’s strengths, we were able to work much more efficiently. We evolved into a united group with common goals, and this evolution is reflected in the deliverables we created in 732 to 752. We learned a lot about the questions to ask when designating roles on a project and paying attention to identify these strengths. We also learned about our own strengths in the process.…

The team members were friendly that we became friends that were able to help each other even in other subjects. Every member was always ready to assist whenever one of us was facing some difficulties concerning the project. Throughout the project, there were several lessons that I learned one being that teamwork is not an easy job.…

Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. This makes sense, because in a professional environment, the ability to communicate, listen and contribute within a group leads to success and the achievement of goals. However, none have gone on as long as this project, making it a more realistic example of working on a team. Junior year of college is definitely a crazy time, as we are forced to balance heavy workloads with extracurriculars and recruiting.…

“As important as the participation of group member is to group synergy, no one wants to encourage participation from members who are obnoxious or bent on sharing misinformation”. (J. Dan Rothwell, pp 276). 3 out of 5 group members were only focused on finishing their portion of the work, which complicated the whole project because it has to be done by the member who proposed the change. Low participation is the problem I felt that we encounter in this group project. I was fully motivated, and willing to spend more time with it; however, not all members were doing effective communications to follow through.…

In fact, my group members were very helpful and whenever one of us had trouble with something we would all participate in solving her problem or giving her helpful tips to solve it. By helping, supporting and motivating each other it made the project easier to solve and it helped us in achieving our work in the most effective time and ways. Here are some points I loved about the experience, firstly being a part of a group helped in developing my skills and we were able to achieve more work than in working individually. Secondly, we had more time to manage and plan. Thirdly I developed more communicating skills and team commitment and also I had more exchange of information between myself and our group members.…

In almost every class I’ve taken thus far at the University of Maryland, my expectation to succeed has been set high. Although a letter grade of an A or B+ does not completely define success, I have established in my mind that I cannot say I have truly master a concept or subject if my grade is lower than a B+. This drive to succeed is not debilitating, but rather provides me with a boost of energy that enables me to strive to do my absolute best in every assignment I complete. So, if I was asked how well do I think I will do in ENGL395, I would set my standards high as always and say I will receive an A. I do not think receiving this grade will come easy, but I am willing to put in the effort and time in order to excel in this course.…
