Come On David Character Analysis

"Come on David, remember the rule, if someone says “hi,” you say “hi” back." This is what twelve-year-old Catherine from the book Rules written by Cynthia Lord has been coaching her younger brother David all her life. David was a child with autism, which means he has trouble applying non-verbal communication. Nevertheless, Catherine has tried to coach David into performing simple tasks that no normal person would ever think about learning. Even though Catherine has been forced upon the responsibility and the embarrassment of having this brother, she had a solid life. However, this all changes when the new girl, Kristi moves in next door. Catherine could tell instantly that Kristi would mature into a popular girl, and did not want David to ruin her chance at becoming friends with the new popular girl. This is shown after she gives Jason the new cards, and she offers to make him more cards. (47) Catherine also shows this trait when she buys Jason a guitar, knowing he likes music and really wanted a guitar. (163) This proves Catherine is a thoughtful friend because she made someone happy, without them asking her. Catherine has proven throughout Rules to be a thoughtful friend.
Finally, Catherine has shown to be a girl fearful of humiliation throughout the book. One example of this trait is shown when Kristi asks Catherine to ask Jason to the dance. Catherine was terrified that people would make fun of her dancing with Jason, and said no. (142) Another example of Catherine’s trait is shown Catherine not wanting David to come to Jason’s party, thinking that people would think her family is weird.
