This may cause hatred towards school history textbooks and confusion of why they would alter the history of Columbus to make him look like a hero. If individuals don’t chose to do research on their own, they may not understand the true history and no understanding of why others feel that Columbus shouldn’t be praised or celebrated for discovering Americas. Therefore, teaching these events will help children have a better understanding of the world issues or even encourage students to not acknowledge the racism and stereotype issues in today’s society. I learned the true history of Columbus’ journeys on my own in college, an instructor was talking about colonization and western thought depicted as true multiple perspectives, and Indigenous issues. After learning the truth, I was angered that the history I was taught in elementary, middle, and high school was only partially true. I was also angered that the textbooks left out the Native American history. If teachers were to teach their students the positive and negative of Columbus history, it would give them a better understanding of why there are multiple issue of race and land. Some may even say it crated hatred amongst people of different cultures and beliefs. There will be educators who will feel that the violence shouldn’t be taught in schools, however I feel that depending on the grade level that it should be taught to the younger generation in hopes of them not wanting history to repeat itself with so much hatred. I don’t understand why education systems would want to teach half-truth of history, which may back fire on them when students reach the lesson of Columbus and then do their own research of Columbus to find out all the violent events that had took place.
