Columbus Public Health has been helping people in the Columbus area live healthier, safer while promoting social justice and serving the underserved. The first records show that in 1833 the mayor appointed five citizens to address the outbreak of Asiatic cholera. The group was successful and the mayor selected them to serve as a permanent body to be activated as needed for health emergencies.

Three of areas promote the health of children, women, and adults. The other four areas are community planning, clinic/counseling, administrative, and licensing/inspection. It is difficult to list all of the services that CPH provides, but I will list a few examples from each category. Children’s services include primary care, dental care, vaccinations, and youth wellness. Women’s health services include maternal-child home visiting, HIV, WIC, and family planning. Adult health services include minority health, the institute for healthy living, and infectious disease. Community health planning includes public affairs and communication, planning and accreditation, outbreak response, infectious disease investigation and reporting, creating healthy communities, and community right-to-know hotline. Clinic/counseling services include the dental clinic, immunizations, substance abuse program, smoking cessation, and sexual health. Duties include collaboration with other health care entities to control infectious diseases through investigation, education and patient follow-up. Public health nurses also participate in immunization clinics, quality improvement, and education to maximize office-based immunizations. They document patient history, collect specimens, perform physical exams, provide treatment, and develop education programming. They also maintain records, prepare reports, and assist with process improvement, audits, and quality assurance programs. Other duties include precepting staff, writing public health policy, and participating in agency committees.
