One of the first students killed was Rachel Joy Scott, 17, a public believer in Christ, shot for her views. There is a movie out now about her story, and how she impacted the lives of others. It’s called I’m Not Ashamed. Rachel was just one of the twelve students killed that day alongside of twenty-three injured others and the death of a teacher. The two boys that committed this horrendous crime searched for fame. They wanted to be remembered for what they did and they wanted it to continue. And it did continue. Students had to stay in their classrooms for an hour and thirty minutes. People in commons had to crowd into the gym and had no idea what was going on. Someone had called the school and threatened gun violence. The police came and covered the perimeter of the school. No one was harmed, and the person threatening student lives was caught.
After the incident, Pickerington Local School District become more intentional about preparing students and staff for school threats. Not long after, everyone was trained in detail about a safety program called A.L.I.C.E.: Advert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. 900 higher educations systems have been trained by this program to successfully combat school attackers. In more than 81 percent of school shootings, information was known that the shooter was attempting or planning the attack, which can give schools the ability to put a stop to it, and use A.L.I.C.E if needed.
Hilliard Davidson, a school in Hilliard, Ohio, recently had a scare of a school threat. It happened at the start of the 2016-17 school year. A Hilliard Davidson student was accused of planning to recruit other students to be a part of his plan of a mass shooting of the school. The student's name was John Staley, 16 years old.
