Title
When traveling through Colorado one may notice the beautiful, luminous columbine flowers, which are the state flower of Colorado. Columbine flowers are known to bring cheer to humans due to their vibrant range of colors and their aesthetically pleasing shape. They thrive in the sun and partial shade. However, when most people hear the word "Columbine” today, they do not think of the flowers that cover the Centennial State. Instead, the name “Columbine” now invokes thoughts of Columbine High School and the horrific event that ultimately defies the flowers’ beauty. Everyone that is, except for two students: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. According to Judy Hasday of "Columbine High School: Student Violence," the two boys had been planning a day that they referred to as "Judgement Day" for over a year. That morning, Eric and Dylan gathered guns, bombs, and ammunition that they had been accumulating for months. After arriving at school around 11am, they went to their school cafeteria packed full of students and faculty. They had with them two duffel bags, each containing a propane tank bomb capable of killing hundreds of people. The bombs failed to detonate, so Harris and Klebold began what is known as a rampage shooting. Guy Fiona, author of “The Columbine Effect and Mass School Shootings,” describes these shootings as, “...those where victims are random and the shooter has opened fire killing anyone they see or anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path. This created a wide separation of groups. People saw the “Trench Coat Mafia,” also known as "goths," as terrible people. Many assumed that just because they wore black, they were planning to cause harm as well. These types of prejudices still exist today, and are all an aftereffect of Columbine. While dressing in a “goth” style does not predispose an individual to violence, the intent of the individual is to set themselves apart from the norm, or to at least stand out from others and be recognized as unique or different due to the clothes they choose to wear. Consequently, while those who choose to dress in this style may not be violent, their style of dress puts them on the radar of those who fear the possibility of another school
