For many places, schools are safe environments where kids are able to learn and prepare for their future. Nowadays, people have started to panic about the safety of schools, due to recent shootings and dangerous activities. Many influences factor into this concern, but one event changed everything. On April 20th, 1999, two students of Columbine High School, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed 13 people in a horrific high school massacre. The Columbine High School shooting was a catalyst that led to mass hysteria throughout America. Columbine High School is located in Littleton, a suburb of Denver. It is not clear what drove them to cause the shooting, but it is believed that the students wanted to get revenge on bullies who made school miserable for them. Describing this event as a “witch hunt” refers to how society often looks for scapegoats or easy explanations for such tragedies, without fully understanding the hidden causes. Although Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were the direct perpetrators for Columbine, they may have been seen as scapegoats because of deeper societal stereotypes. For example, they were considered different or called “weird kids”. The factors of music, video games, or certain identities like goth or alternative, played a role that led to widespread panic and stereotypes of these elements. Likewise, this can symbolize historical witch hunts where individuals were persecuted based on fear and prejudice rather than evidence. The aftermath of the massacre was devastating to America.
