On April 20th, 1999 the world was forever changed. This was the day of the famous school shooting at Columbine High School. On this day 13 people were killed in what is thought of as a safe place. How could two people do such an act? There was many theories about how someone could commit such a tragic crime, their parents, mental health, social cliques, and influences from music, video games and movies by examining this I will be able to analyze the root cause.
On the morning of April 20th Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into the cafeteria, where they left two duffle bags containing propane bombs. The two teens then left the school and waited outside planning on shooting the fleeing survivors of …show more content…
Some theories suggested that music, violent movies and video games had influenced them. Many people in the media blamed Marilyn Manson because he was a Goth singer that Eric and Dylan listened to. The media put so much blame on Marilyn Manson that it resulted in him having to cancel the remaining shows in his tour. Two years later he was set to perform in Denver. There was a major protest led by a victim’s father blaming him for the act of Eric and Dylan. Marilyn Manson spoke about it in the Documentary Bowling for Columbine, he said that it was easy to blame him because of the way he looked. He often talked about killing in his songs because it was a way to deal with his life and express his emotions. He has stated that his lyrics don’t promote suicidal feelings that they actually help people through those feelings. However the media not only blamed Marilyn Manson they also blamed violent movies. Craig Scott remembers Eric quoting lines from the movie Natural Born Killers as he shot people. Eric also wrote in Dylan’s yearbook a year before the attacks saying “God I can’t wait till they die. I can taste the blood now. - NBK.” The media was accurate about video games, Eric was known for loving the game Doom. He loved the video game so much that he also had the books about it. In the videos Eric and Dylan made before the attacks, Eric had said that it was going to be like Doom and the shotgun was …show more content…
We cannot keep doing nothing about them and expecting them to stop. After researching I have determined that this problem is only growing. Columbine is now the third worst school shootings after Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook Elementary. I have determined that this is a Nature problem and the environment around the children are influencing them. If this is true then we should be teaching kids love and how to stop conflict in social programs. However I also believe it is caused by a bigger problem, mental health. Psychologists have decided that both Eric and Dylan were dealing with mental illnesses. It is often discovered after a school shooting that the shooter had a mental illness. However we are still not doing anything about this, resulting in these incidents to keep happening. Schools should be requiring teachers to take mental health courses so they can help students. The world has not become more violent, it has just became more media influenced. This is exactly what Eric and Dylan wanted. They wanted to be talked about and remembered for what they did. At the mention of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold most people are familiar with their names and know what they have done. But when you mention names such as Cassie Bernal or Steve Curnow you often don’t know their names or any of the other 11 victims that died
