I started watching horror movies with my brother when I was about eleven years old. This fascination of serial killers and ghosts led to my interest of documentaries about real life murders and serial killer. The aspect of these killers that interested me the most was that fact that many are “normal” people. How could an everyday person, just like me, have the desire to do something so horrible? Why don’t we all commit such horrible crimes? One of the most infamous cases in the history of the United States is the Columbine High School Massacre. The two killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, attempted to mass murder the students at their high school, in response to the bullying they claimed to have endured during their time there.

Similar to Strain Theory, a conflict theorist would argue that the bullying affected how they felt about society, and their deviance is result of it. They were treated negatively and felt like they were not being treated equally to their peers. Labeling theory could also play a factor in their situation, which states that once someone gives you a label, you begin to believe that is what you are and you act upon it. If they were constantly being called negative names, they may have started to believe that they were actually those things, which led to their poor decisions. The last theory that can be used to explain this situation is Edwin Sutherland’s Differential Association Theory, which states that individuals learn deviant behavior from those close to them. If other students were harassing them, then they must have initially felt the need to harass them back. This raises a question about they mental sanity, as killing a large group of people would result from the inability to control your Id, or your instincts. Is it fair to say that bullying correlated to their actions, were they unable to control their impulses, or is it a combination of both? While these sociological question will never have a clear cut answer, I believe it is safe to assume that they were unhappy with themselves and the people around them, which influenced the
