Columba Observation

Decent Essays
The constellation I chose for this assignment is Columba, also known as "the dove". I chose this constellation because the dove has been a symbol of peace for centuries, and we all need a little more peace in our lives, don't we? Anyway, Columba came into being when Petrus Plancius, the Dutch astronomer, wanted to differentiate loose stars from Canis Major in 1592.

The group of stars was meant to represent the dove that brought an olive branch to Noah in the popular Christian Bible story "Noah's Ark". This signaled to Noah that dry land was nearby, meaning that the great flood was subsiding. For this reason, the constellation's original name was Columba Noachi, meaning "Noah's Dove".

Good afternoon, I have supervised CBPO Michael Gudreau when he was assigned to the Eagle Pass Port of Entry. He is well versed in the Passenger Processing Section and can apply both Customs and Immigration Law. When he was eligible to be selected for the Eagle Pass Passenger Processing Teams, I inquired about his work ethic with the Training Department of Eagle Pass as he was completing his Post Academy Training in order to select him on my team. The recommendation they gave me was an excellent one as they advised me that he was a team player, eager to learn, self-taught, self-motivated, and very professional in both appearance and demeanor. I selected CBPO Gudreau to be a part of my team.…

While little is known of his early life, the man behind this incredible book of star map was born in 1794, the son of a farmer and shoemaker, and in 1817, became a schoolteacher. He published his first book in 1818, titled "Logarithmick Arithmetick", but his most important work was the "The Geography of the Heavens" and it's accompanying "Celestial Atlas," which sold for a little over a dollar in 1833. Included in the 1856 edition are constellations for each month, the South Pole and North Pole constellations, the planets' relative magnitude and detail regarding the stars, clusters, comets and nebulae associated with each constellation. The names of each constellation is given, outlines of the figures that the constellations are names after, along with the brightest stars (some identified by name) that connected to…

Throughout history, there has been a reasonable logic that reading and writing leads to a normal life, but this logic is terribly skewed in a rather narrow minded viewpoint. In Richard Miller’s stories of Columbine, Jon Krakauer’s study of Chris McCandless, Mary Karr’s autobiography shows the various degrees of reading and writing inflicted on specific cases. In each of these stories, they have profound conclusions about reading and writing ranging in total with a lack of communication or in the form of curiosity or interaction. A lack of communication can occur with the relative isolation or selfishness of any one person who believes that they are wiser than anyone else or believes they are outsiders. In contrast, a form of curiosity or interaction…

Many ancient civilizations worshipped the sun, stars, and the moon, believing it would bring them closer to their gods. In Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations, they gazed up into the sky each night and recorded what they saw. They realized that the stars orbited in the same way each night. “They soon learnt to recognize those that seemed fixed to the vault of heaven, reappearing each night in the same place. And they saw shapes in the constellations and gave them names” (Gombrich, 20).…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

For this assignment I've chosen Orion (The Hunter) and I've chosen this one because my mother had always pointed this one out whenever we could see him. Orion is just one of the constellations located on the celestial equator and is visible throughout the world. Orion's current name derives from Greek mythology. Its brightest stars are Rigel (Beta Orionis) and Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), a blue-white and a red Supergiant. Orion's name derives from Greek Mythology, in which Orion was a gigantic, inhumanly strong hunter of ancient times born to Euryale, a Gorgon and Poseidon (Neptune), god of the sea in the Graeco-Roman tradition.…

My favorite constellation is the Cetus or 'whale' because I think it looks more like a frying pan than a whale. The Cetus is a constellation made up of 88 stars and the brightest star is called Deneb Kaitos. The Cetus is very close to the other zodiac constellations such as Aries, Pisces and Aquarius. The creation story of the Cetus constellation stems from Greek mythology. In this story the Cetus is called a Sea Monster and not a whale.…

The Big Dipper is the first constellation I learned to identify as a child. Though I made up stories and constellations as I stared into the velvety darkness, the Big Dipper was the only "real" one I knew. This constellation is one of the easiest to find, as well as being one of the few that can be spotted year-round in North America. It is also part of another constellation, Ursa Major. Another advantage to being able to point out is that it also becomes easy to find Polaris, the North Star.…

The Celts took this symbol and associated it with the creation of all things. Within the deep roots of a massive magic tree mankind was created amongst the roots. It was so sacred to the Celts, that when the Celtic farmers would clear fields for planting they would often leave a single tree in the center of the field just to pay tribute to such a sacred object. The Christian version of the tree of life went all the way back to creation, just like the Celts, but instead of the tree creating all life, it was the tree with the forbidden fruit where Eve partook of the fruit and then convinced Adam to do so as well. In doing so it banished them from the Garden of Eden forever as it says in “Genesis “, the first book in the bible.…
