"Death is nothing more than a doorway, something you walk through." This quote by Dr. George Ritchie suggests that death is no more complex than walking through a doorway. His opinion is based on the fact that Ritchie has experienced this doorway through a near-death experience, or NDE. His NDE, along with many other accounts, have described various encounters with this door. Fourteen year old Colton Burpo has also encountered this doorway and his story sparked the world’s attention. The stories that Colton Burpo tells from his experience in heaven have tested the medical and spiritual aspects of his life, the lives of his family, and lives all over the world.

He lived a carefree childhood with few obstacles to weaken his happiness. His wide imagination led him to discoveries of his own, new worlds. But when Colton was four years old, he shared a story that seemed a little too real to be anything but reality. Colton became ill with what seemed like the stomach flu. When the pain and fever became excessive, Todd and Sonja rushed their son to the hospital where we was diagnosed with appendicitis. Emergency surgery became the only outlet to saving Colton’s life. Colton never flatlined while on the operating table but he states, however, that during surgery, he went to heaven. Colton describes the journey to heaven as tranquil and amicable. Escorted by angels, he made his way to the doorway of heaven. Upon entering, Colton meets Jesus, who calls him by name. During his visit in heaven, Colton also meets his miscarried sister and his grandpa Pop, neither of which he was familiar with on earth. When he shares his remarkable encounters with Jesus and his family members, Colton’s father cannot help but be awed and amazed with his son’s descriptions. Hesitant at first, Todd and Sonja keep Colton’s story to themselves to verify his tellings. Once they fully believe their four year old’s larger than life tales, they and Colton shared them with the world. Everyone that heard Colton’s story fell in love with him and wanted to hear every detail of his visit to heaven. Todd and Colton fulfilled their requests by publishing their book, Heaven is For Real. This book brings Colton’s encounter to life with details of his experiences in heaven. From being lifted from his body on the operating table, to sitting on Jesus’ lap, to meeting family members, Heaven is For Real gives a visual to its readers of what Colton claims heaven to be like. The music and bright lights, along with the celestial welcome he received upon arrival, confirmed Colton’s stance

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

“Salvation” is a shocking deviation from the customary religious chronicles heard today. While the account is a provocation for some, it provides insight and understanding of the often invalidated feelings of doubt and deception to others. The majority of spiritual narratives tells of passionate restitutions with Christ, while Langston Hughes’ tale describes a vastly different testimony. Whereas most Christian disciples strive for honesty and integrity, pretenses fill “Salvation”. Deception is a huge theme in this essay; in fact, the first sentence is a lie.…

Melvin Morse, M.D author of “Closer to the Light” gives us a profounder understanding about near-death experience (NDE) by using personal stories from patients and research other doctors have unveiled. Throughout the book, Dr. Morse gives short stories of different patients who have undergone a NDE or something similar to it. He also describes how our society differs from the society hundred years ago in dealing with NDE patients. This book is a remarkable example on how our society should be reflected, how it should be implied on the personal lives of everyone, and an excellent explanation on why there are not any NDE. Dr. Morse begins the book by telling the story of his first case dealing with a NDE patient named Katie.…

Throughout life, everyone faces the frightening thoughts of how and when one will die. The possibility of death can be next week, tomorrow, or maybe even today. I was born to a Hindu family – and therefore, I call myself a Hindu, based on the cultural exposures that I have had through my family and my religious community. And yet Hinduism for me is like a foundation, one on which I have built my own perceptions of God and religion, based on my own life experiences. My particular views may therefore seem unique at best, blasphemous at worst – but they will have a great impact on how I act as a patient, and as a physician. Like many Hindus, I believe in reincarnation. Traditionally, reincarnation means that after death, souls are reborn many times to repay their debts, to right their wrongs, and to rid themselves of their past karmas, or deeds, until they are ready to become one with God.…
