My role in this group investigation was to record the time of how long it took for each coloured ice to melt on a metal and plastic surface. I also found links to curriculum followed by finding real-world applications which linked to our experiment. The research which I carried out for the science investigation focused on heat energy which related to conduction. The investigation consisted of finding out which coloured ice cube (yellow and blue) with 1, 2 and 3 drops of colour melted faster on metal and plastic. The energy source used to identify which coloured ice cube melted faster was heat from the sun. Conduction occurs regularly in nature and is the transferred from heat through physical contact. Particles that move faster near other particles ‘excite’. The movement of particles increase in a solid and overpower the togetherness which grasp the particles together only if heated sufficiently (Science Learning Hub, 2009). Fundamentally, I found out the reasoning behind heat melting ice on different surfaces.

I also became familiar with roughly how long it takes for ice to melt on metal or plastic surfaces. Melting and freezing materials are dependent on temperature, so when something melts to liquid, it is the same substance as the liquid (Victoria State Government Education and Training, 2017).
Somethings which I found easy about the experiment was getting the materials together to conduct the experiment. The experiment overall was easy and enjoyable. Also, the theory behind the investigation was fairly interesting as it allowed myself to gain new knowledge. A difficult aspect of the experiment was trying to do the experiment on a day where the sun was out as the sun was our main source of supply for the heat towards the ice.
