Colorism In Minority Communities

Decent Essays
To what extent does colorism exist within each minority community in the U.S.? Give some examples. Many children in minority communities who have darker complexions are exposed to berating jokes about their darker skin and are treated unfavorably while lighter skinned children receive preferential treatment from adults and people within the community. This causes children to grow up feeling inferior to lighter skinned individuals which promotes self-hate. The negative dialogue regarding darker complexions also causes girls to identify themselves as ugly or less attractive. Boys with darker skin are negatively affected as well. They are often programmed to believe lighter skin is more attractive, thus making the decision to date and ultimately

In my opinion, the biggest barrier that society must overcome is the availability of quality care for all individuals of society, especially those who are in minority groups. A few health disparities for our society include cardiovascular disease, substance use, low socioeconomic status, and being uninsured. These disparities can be significantly reduced if appropriate care is available for all individuals. Lack of funding and resources, especially in regards to these minorities groups, prevent many individuals from ever getting treatment. If every member of society had availability to quality to healthcare, individuals would be able to receive comprehensive care that can prevent the need for further intensive services for their health conditions.…

Many sociologists describe Race as a social construct, or something that appears to be natural and obvious to people who accept it but it may not be reality. Therefore many sociologists believe that race doesn't actually exist. Though people may see race, its not actually there. This would mean all the things we've ever known about race are completely pointless. Race only exists if people allow it to exist.…

Judges don’t look at the punishment itself, but the volume at which the offense occurs can play a factor. It could be someone’s first offense a harsh sentence could possibly be imposed. It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

    1. One of the central tenants of the paradigm of Hauntology is that bad things that happen in the past will continue to haunt our society. Another central tenant is that minorities facing problems in the past will continue to suffer in the present and in the future. For example, Warren Cariou describes a situation in which past events continue to haunt our society when he writes about how native people were killed or exiled from their land by Europeans, so the ghosts of the native people returned to seek vengeance upon them. Cariou explains why this revenge of the land occurred: “Revenge is of course the return of something: an injury…misdeeds of the past creates a climate in which dangerous symptoms must erupt in the present” (Cariou 729).…

Colorism is a controversial issue that occurs worldwide, but it mainly occurs in the African American community. Colorism is a form of discrimination that occurs in a particular community where lighter skin tones are treated better than people with darker skin tones. Discrimination between the same ethnic or racial groups dates back to slavery when Willie Lynch’s speech in 1712 proposes a way to control slaves and make them envy each other just by separating the light skin tones from dark skin tones. In countries such as Asia or India, colorism plays a huge role in the success of women. For example, in Asia if a women is not as white as snow she is not considered pretty.…

The American education system is a complete mess in regards to race divisions. The educational system is in fact the main contributor to race divisions in schools. More than half of the funding for schools come from “local sources” such as property taxes, stated by Eduardo Porter. This means that poorer neighborhoods get less funding than a rich neighborhood. This gap is huge, thus giving the rich an “edge” over the poor (Porter).…

Colorism affects the African American community psychologically, financially, and educationally. Phycological issues that occur from colorism stems from the media and what is considered “beautiful”. Colorism can be seen on a day to day basis in the media with simple things such as magazines using Photoshop, and filters to lighten the skin tone of darker skin people in order to make them seem more appealing to the public. African American women in the media often depict lighter skinned black women as a representation of what a pretty black woman is supposed to look like, adding to the idea that lighter is prettier is the depiction of African American women in Rap and hip-hop videos. Due to the fact that Rap and hip-hop are extremely prevalent in the African American community the portrayal of a pretty black woman in the videos was that of a light skin woman with a thin nose, thin lips, and straight and long hair.…

Race and ethnicity in America is such an important issue in America, I am baffled by the lack of knowledge I had for the topic. I was always under the impression that race and ethnicity was the same thing, but I am embarrassed to say I was absolutely wrong. There is no biological evidence of race; it is a social construct that was created to dehumanize a group of individuals to make them feel “inferior” to the other group. The concept of race has been braided in our society so deep, that it plays a role in our everyday life. For example, if a black individual acts proper they will be considered to be acting “white” and if a white individual acts urban they will be considered to be acting “black”, but according to Ann Morning , “no…

As they were giggling and enjoying the finish look, her friend eyed her short sleeve dress and commented how her skin looked even lighter than usual, that she looked even prettier without the tan. Layla rolled her eyes but comments about her skin tone were very common. Within the Somali community, the colorism was a real issue.…
