Concert Report #2

For my second concert report I attended the Colorado State University Honor Band recital. This was help December 12, 2015 at the Griffin Concert Hall. This concert was a collective group of honor band students from a variety of Colorado high schools and home schooled students. A range from freshmen to seniors. These students were standouts and handpicked from their respects schools. This was a students were led by conductor Rodney Dorsey. Dorsey comes from the University of Oregon School of music and dance. At the University of Michigan where he taught undergraduate conducting. The first piece that was preformed was Symphonic Suite put together by a five movement work. I came in the order of Intrada, Chorale, March, Antique

The rhythm of the song was consistent, here and there is ranged but nothing to force. The tempo to me felt a slower at the start. Then gradually toward the end it picked up. I felt as the harmony of this as very complex. This was a familiar to me, later on recognized it as a fragment part from ‘Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light’ which was written by Johann Sebastian Bach, which I have heard many times at church. Thought the performance I noticed that the trumpet players kept inserting and taking out a part from the bell. Seemed as it softened the sound it was giving off. I guess it was a well picked piece to preform due to Christmas slowly …show more content…
By John P. Painter. The tone starts off almost frantic, each section echoes off each other, almost as it seemed over lapped. To me I felt as it had a very wild range in its tone. The melody was never still or on a flat line, towards the end in settled into a middle section where everyone was able to collectively able to stay at the same tone. The bet or tempo at the start I notice had me tapping my toes. I notice when the piece changed gears and calm was after the flutes had a solo part of their own. That was kind of the turning point. Also I had to give notice to the triangle player, even though he had a small instrument, the way he contributed was quite surprising. There was a long period of time he had to keep beat and pace with the rest which looked easy but I noticed he had to get into it himself with head bobs to keep himself in rhythm. I really took notice to how each individual ether taped there toe or movement with their knee to keep rhythm with the

At the student honor recital there was many great performances. The works I am going to talk about are Denneriana and American Suite for Unaccompanied Snare Drum. For this assignment I am going to be analyzing the piece “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White”. The writer Prado was called “The King of the Mambo” and according to Rolling Stone he was responsible for helping popularize the Cuban- originated genre in America with this particular song. The song itself is very rhythmic and upbeat with a couple of different ideas throughout. The first idea (Idea A) is repeated twice at the beginning of the piece up until :36. Idea B is then repeated twice until :53. At 1:03 a piano enters the chorus, and then at 1:51 a flute enters and gives a lot softer of a feeling to the music.…

You could also hear that the violins were not together the entire time but managed to recover towards the middle. This orchestra did an excellent job of blending covering up any potential missed notes. The ensemble does an excellent job of accenting the quarter notes prior to the repeat and changing dynamics adding almost a sense of finality. The repeated portion was great besides inconsistent dynamics on the same parts the second time. The low voices are much more confident and can easily be heard adding a powerful sound and increasing complexity to this piece.…

The first selection of the evening was Band of Brothers by Micheal Kamen. This song has an intense melody with rhythmic harmony throughout the performance. The song has a very uplifting tempo that drove it along. Near the end of the song, the tempo slows down and then picks back up to create a grand finale. The triumphant sound created by the percussions was very influential to me, and made me think of unity.…

The percussion got me very excited in the beginning with the loud clanks from the pot drums. Also, the pitch starts off very low. A solo trumpet plays a beautiful smooth melody. The tones of the solo had some bends that made the sound wavy. The beginning is mostly free flowing.…

I loved this composition also because the speed of the performers was amazing. They performed it by following the conductor’s beat, which made this piece more melodious. Similarly, the composition “March” was performed in crescendo and had a consonant harmony. Because of the fast tempo and tone, it made me recall when I was young how I always felt excited about going on a trip.…

James Tenney 's "Having Never Written a Note for Percussion" felt calm and collected within the first few minutes. It reminded me of an electronic piece I composed for another class. However, about five minutes in, I became suddenly aware of the volume and sense of restlessness the composition was bestowing within me. There wasn 't much movement, pitch wise, and it felt like a wave of sound was crashing into me. The contrast between the barely audible beginning to the loud crescendo was so gradual and smooth, I almost didn 't realize the piece was getting louder until my ears couldn 't quite stand the sound anymore.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

The concert I will review for my final assignment will be Ludwig Van Beethoven’s 9th symphony as performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It contains four movements: The first movement starts with hard dramatic strings, leading into a plethora of pleasant melodies and lovely consonance. An emotional rollercoaster would best describe this movement as the piece transitions from soft calming sounds from the horns and woodwinds to hard-pressed portions that are dominated by the string group. This movement ends with a striking build-up of woodwind melodies and soft strings into a climatic burst of energy from the strings and percussions.…

This piece is from the modern era as it was wrote in 2012. The piece itself was written to represent the landscape of Wallah Wallah, Washington. This was the place of a musical festival that she and her husband had founded.…

The musical notes ring through the air with a certain beauty about them that is special compared to other pieces from different composers. His work was good enough to get him jobs working for the church and royalty of all kinds. Bach was born in Germany on March 31st, 1685 into a family of musicians.…
