Through his book Whiteness of a Different Color, Matthew Frye Jacobson explores the intricacies of what is described as whiteness throughout United States history. Jacobson opens his introductory chapter by describing the roots of race in society. He describes how society has long seen race to be a result of biological differences, but that scholars have recently questioned this notion with classificational conventions of interracial children, along with the idea that some races have either emerged or disappeared entirely from the eyes of the public, whereas their descendents still exist. Jacobson first introduces the idea that race is created, not biological, with an excerpt from Philip Roth’s Counterlife, in which two characters argue over…

In the epic poem, Beowulf, the recurring image of darkness is often used as a portrayal of death and the unknown. The author also uses the same image to depict evil and sin and its relationship to Christianity. The underlying elements of Christianity within Beowulf can be attributed to the recent conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Through the persisting application of darkness, Beowulf addresses the presence of sin and the fundamental Christian beliefs in a savior and the redemption from sin. Throughout the poem, the pervasive use of sinister monsters lurking in darkness portrays the immoral acts of sin and evil.…

Throughout the novel many items and characters are described as having a white or light feature physically on it. One major example from that embodies the symbolism of the color white is Clarisse. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag says “ Her face was slender and milk-white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity.... Her dress was white and it whispered.” In this quote, Montag is describing Clarisse using the color white in order to convey the idea that she is pure, innocent, alive.…

There are also very few instances of brighter white and one those few is the tag is a brighter white. These tags were used to identify the Japanese families and every single family had to have a tag on them the contrasting bright white on the child's black coat brings attention to this fact. POWER STRUGGLE IN LORD OF THE FLIES Power is believed to be the only thing stronger than fear. When Lord of the Flies was published in 1954 the novel is considered to be about humans that are inherently evil and when given power, how they choose to use it. Golding demonstrates this through the use of characterization examining Jack and Ralph as individual characters; symbolism is used to illustrate the power in the novel; and lastly, the conflict/dialogue between Ralph, Jack and its effects on the atmosphere. In Golding 's novel Lord of the Flies, he implies that with power comes responsibility and the capability to abuse power or act with righteousness.…

The Wall's Night's Watch, whom Martin describes as "criminal scum who are also heroes and they wear black", was a deliberate twist on fantasy stereotypes. Furthermore, the use of black as the identifying color for the essentially good Night's Watch and the use of white for the much corrupted Kingsguard is another example of Martin subverting traditional fantasy which tends to link light colors with good and darker ones with evil. As any universally adored or hated fictional characters are too one-dimensional to present real life, Martin writes his characters with well-mixed natures so that readers will invest in and identify with them. The actions and politics in the novels leave it to the reader to decide about who is good and evil. Characters are explored from many sides through the multiple viewpoint structure so that, unlike in a lot of other fantasy, the supposed villains can provide their viewpoint.…
