Shug Avery is a pivotal character in Alice Walker's the color purple due to the affect she has on Celie and Albert. Shug helps Celie define who she is as a person and change her outlook upon life and the current situations that she's facing. She also has a very special relationship with Albert spanning back many years into both their youths. Shug is used in the book as a character designed to further move the plot and show the mentality changes in Celie and Albert over the course of the book.She has sexual relationships with both Celie and Albert in the book which is not very common for a book set in this time and place and acts as a mothering figure to Celie which is why she is a very important and widely used character in the book.
