Shug has always been an sexualised character in the book with the first time Celie saw her she declared how she was “Bout ten thousand times more prettier then me” (P 8). Shug shows Celie and Albert affection at different times during the book as she slowly starts to become closer with Celie her and Celie’s interactions start to become more sexual.
“Us kiss and kiss till us can't hardly kiss no more. Then us touch each other...Then I feels something real soft and wet on my breast, feel like one of my little lost babies mouth." (P 113)
Celie and Shug’s relationship is an very confusing part of the book as unlike the relationship between Albert and Shug which is very straightforward. This confusion is due to the fact that their relationship is not made out to be one of sexuality and more one of friendship.
