Celie is a poor, uneducated black woman with a sad personal history. Her father, whom she later finds out that is actually her stepfather, raped her multiple times because her mother wouldn’t do anything with him. She had two children by him, a boy and a girl, but after she gave birth, he took them away. A man named Albert came by her house and asked her father if he could marry her sister, Nettie. She later married a different man because she knew she would never be able to have Albert. Although, before she married, she was staying with Celie and Albert. She was often very cruel to Celie, but she soon befriended her, and taught her she was worth something. Shug also taught her that she deserved much better than the man she was with. She began as a snobby woman, but changed into a great friend to more than one person. I believe Shug is the root to everyone’s happiness and forgiveness.
The Color Purple portrays the changes of dynamic characters. Celie went from timid to proud, Albert went from abusive to kind, and Shug went from mean to helpful.
