So often when student write, their writing becomes impersonal. The all the thought and feeling is gone. When we were given the book, Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to his White Mother, at first I was not so sure if I was going to like the book. In high school when we were given a book to read and write on the teachers wanted nothing to do with how we felt about it. This made class very difficult, in high school, and hard because of this distance I found the book tougher to read. When I was able to relate the book to a part of my life, it made read and understanding key points a little easier. For me, relating the book to my life helped me get a feel for the character, I was able to understand the emotion they were going through in the situations they were in. Also writing while reading ensures, for the most part, students are reading. Not everyone may be fully reading every sentence on every single page, however we care enough to read some of it and write a paper on it. I my life there are some stories people should know, because these are the stories that have shaped me into the person I am today.
