Monochrome In her book Persepolis Marjane Satrapi gives the readers astonishing pictures to look at as they read, and the pictures give a sense of how she felt. Persepolis is the story of Satrapi’s life. She tells about her childhood changing from a common childhood to a war-based lifestyle with conflict everywhere she turns. Satrapi portrayed these graphic pictures in black and white instead of color. Throughout her book, she uses the color black and white for the pictures to symbolize opposites. These opposites are freedom vs. oppression, modernism vs. fundamentalism, and peace vs. war. Satrapi also uses the colors black and white to symbolize her coming of age. The color black is associated with authority and is a symbol of power. It is a dominant color, and sometimes represents depression. This implies that the color black promotes strong emotions. The color white is associated with purity, or innocence. Hence why a bride wears white. This implies that this color promotes a positive and clean environment. Satrapi draws her graphic pictures in black and white to give the readers a sense of how she feels, as well as how she portrays scenes in her life. Black is used to show adulthood and white is used to show youth in Persepolis. Up until page 149, Marji is usually dressed in white. As her hair gets longer and readers notice that she is growing up, she starts to wear more black. On page 142, the first panel she is dressed in white as she sobs over having to leave. As the panels go on, readers see her wearing black and they notice the maturity she has gain and the realization as to why they are sending her to Vienna. Through the end of the book, she is always dressed in black, instead of white. This symbolizes how she has gotten older and ready to move forward in her new life in
