Colonialism can acquire numerous results that change a society which can be positive or negative however within the Igbo culture it has flourished and become a positive input to their growing society. The Igbo society became colonized by the British when slave trade accelerated in 1807. The British shared their religion, Christianity, which many Igbo people have taken in as their own. The colonialism has also provided the women of this culture more rights and freedoms, which otherwise would not have been part of their previous way of life. Furthermore, the colonialism of the Igbo enabled for modernization and advancements in the economy and trading system. Despite losing parts of their traditional culture, which still remains part of their way of life, the colonization has aided the Igbo in women’s rights along with modernizing certain aspects of their lives.

One final thing it did was increase the number of people who opened their own shops and people who worked for those shops. In the article “ Igbo People” by the New World Encyclopedia it says, “The principal exports are palm oil and palm kernels, harvested from the fruit of the palm tree. Exported to Europe in large quantities, it is a profitable cash crop. Trading, local crafts, and physical labor are also important to the economy.
