Colon cancer is also called colorectal cancer; it is a cancer of the digestive system, it affects any part of the colon. This type of cancer begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids. In most cases, there are not any early symptoms of the disease, that is why it is especially important to obtain a colonoscopy. However, some individuals may experience constipation, diarrhea, or changes in bowel movements that last longer than average. An individual may feel tired, experience weight loss. An infected person may have bloody stools or long thin pencil stools(normally indicating the tumor has obstructed the large intestine). Bloating or discomfort in the stomach, the rectum may cramp or if the disease has reached an advanced stage, severe pelvic pain may occur.
The majority of cancers usually start as a fleshy growth. In the case of colon cancer, a polyp begins in the inside of the colon lining, in which, the growth may become cancerous. Polyps are normally in the inner wall of the colon. An individual with cancer 's- survival odds, are dependent on the stage of cancer they are diagnosed with. For colon cancer patients, Stage 0 is found in the inner lining of the colon. Stage 1 reaches past the inner lining of the colon, to the outer layers. Stage 2 has a larger tumor, and goes through the muscular wall of the colon. Stage 3 surpasses the colon and spreads to the lymph nodes. Stage 3 is divided into 3 types: A,B or C.
