Colombia is a country situated in the northwestern part of South America. It is a republic sharing borders with Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru (World Factbook, 2015). Colombia is a diverse country in terms of ethnicity, linguistic differences and geographic features. Colombia has a history of armed conflict since the 19th century which has caused a severe damage to the country in every prospect. However, the armed conflicts had decreased drastically since the government signed a peace treaty with rebel forces in 2005. Colombia has the third largest economy in the Latin American region which has been on rise in the recent years (GlobalEdge, 2016).
Political Factors
In the 1960s, some insurgent groups and drug cartels started guerrilla warfare against the government. Amongst the guerilla groups, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was the biggest group. Colombia has a long history of active drug cartels producing illegal drugs on a mass scale to export it to USA. Colombia has seen a major economic boom due to the pro-economic measure taken by the government. The country has also been stable politically in the fast years.
