In 1538, this area was found by the Spanish and called New Granada. This remained the areas official name for around three more centuries. This country is very diverse in geography from jungles to mountain ranges and huge plateaus. The country is not land locked, but it is bordered by four other countries- Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador (Infoplease).
The Republic of Colombia has a republic based government with three branches similar to the United States. The Executive branch dominates the government with Juan Manuel Santos Calderon as the president. Bogota is the capital city of Colombia with 9.765 million residents World Factbook). Around thirty three percent of the people in Colombia are involved in agriculture in some way. Coffee is the largest legal agricultural export in the country. There are around 300,000 farms that exclusively grow coffee (World Book). "The second-largest coffee producer in the world, some 20 per cent of all cultivated land in Colombia is dedicated to growing mild Arabica beans, mostly for export. Although small scale, with an average farm size of just 1.2 ha, coffee production employs around a quarter of all agricultural labor and is a major source of income in many rural areas (New Agriculture)." Colombia also sells the second most cut flowers in the world only behind the Netherlands. This is a one billion dollar a year business for the country's farmers (New Agriculture). Most of the land in Colombia is held by rich land owners. They rent or lease small parts of this land to people that grow enough food for their families to survive on. Colombia is a very diverse country. Even though the country is very poor, the economy is improving because of recent industrialization. They still depend a lot on agriculture because it employs about a third of the country's population. Colombia's government system is set up similar to that of the United States, but in Colombia, the executive branch is somewhat stronger than the legislative and judicial branches.
