Hoarding is an extremely dangerous habit. It puts people’s lives at risk especially the hoarders themselves as well as family, friends, and any first responder that may have to respond to such a situation. Hoarding presents fire and health hazards.
The Collyer brothers are one such case of hoarding. The elder’s name was Homer and the younger’s Langley. In 1933 Homer went blind from hemorrhages in the back of his eyes. Langley then quit his job to look after him. After some attempted robberies and rocks thrown through windows in their house, Langley boarded up the windows and created booby traps in the passages and tunnels running throughout the ceiling high junk.

On Monday, May 24, 2010, the police received a call from a neighbor who was worried about the couples well fair. The police called the fire department for help after noting an odd smell. After firefighters forced their way in, it was found to be full of rubbish. Weeks earlier Thelma had fallen through the stacks of trash. Unable to get up, Jesse went to rescue her and fell trapping himself as well. The couple was taken to the hospital in critical condition from malnutrition.
Unlike Jesse, Thelma, Homer, and Langley, Vycheslav Nekrosav’s house caught on fire. His house was also stuffed from floor to ceiling with rubbish. Over 150 firefighters were dispatched to the three-alarm fire on March 3, 2006. He was found severely burned and unconscious by the apartment door which he was unable to get out of because of all the debris in front of it, which delayed firefighters from getting in.
