When both social and personal distinctions clash between the two groups, the consequences affect the religion, agriculture, and judicial system. The arrival of a new culture only affects Okonkwo's tragic fate as an character.Mr. Brown, the first missionary, and Obierika, Okonkwo's good friend isn't any where near as prehensive as Okonkwo is. Whereas Okonkwo is an unreliable man of action, the other two are more open and adaptable men of thought to the Umuofia people.While Mr. Brown converts by:respecting the traditions and beliefs of the Igbo and agriculture of the Umuofia people.Obierika is also an open minded person for acceptance. “If one finger brought oil its soiled the others” pg. 89 Third, This quote is example of how gods were consulted and demanded with land as an Mbaino to pay for retribution. However if the Umuofia people obey their gods and had gone to war they would have most likely been defeated and therefore the quote is an example of what they believe to pay or make the way for their problems .
