In Collins’ Statistics versus Words, he states how in order to have adequate research, one needs to provide a hypothesis to have validity. He argued that if you don’t come up with a hypothesis before you examine the phenomena, you would not be able to test the evidence fully. He states that if you create your theory after finding evidence, there is no way to test the validity of the theory using that evidence. According to Keynes, he stated that those who provide evidence after coming up with a hypothesis essentially will have more weight placed on it as oppose to a theory that is created surrounding the findings. This is due to the fact that grounds which the theory has been created didn't come from nowhere. …show more content…
I have chosen this topic for content analysis in order to understand the themes depicted to women on the subject of romance and how this affects them in their search for love. My hypothesis for this topic is that romantic movies are viewed by many women and emphasize the expectations for romance. This therefore results in the more romantic movies a woman is exposed to, the more likely she is to create an illusion of how romance should be seen and achieved in the real world. Women therefore compare their own relationships to ones that are displayed in movies. For this analysis the sampling frame would be romantic comedy movies. The sampling approach I have chosen for my topic is random sampling. I intend on picking a handful of romantic movies starting from the early 2000’s and onwards. A random sampling approach should be used in order to get a variety of romance movies over the course of sixteen years. I have chosen this as my sampling approach as it relates to our generation and would be appropriate for seeing how expectations have been created and translated to women. My coding scheme for this content analysis would be unrealistic expectations versus realistic expectations. I would also code who brings forth the expectations in the movie which would either be the male or the female character. Another code that could be used for this topic would be happy ending versus sad ending. By using that coding, it reinforces how the expectations for relationships should carry out. The qualitative criterion I have decided to use in order to approve or disapprove my hypothesis is to see how the themes of love are brought about in the movies and which sex is responsible for the ideals of love in our real world. Once it has been discovered which one of the sexes plays a more prevalent role in these romantic movies, I intend on
