Collegiate Sports Essay

After reading this week’s material along with the discussion posts, I noticed two economic debates that are currently happening in the sports world today. One controversial topic presented this week is whether NCAA players should get paid for their participation in collegiate sport. The other ongoing debate is whether the local government should subsidize the operation of sporting arenas and if they should use taxpayer money to fund these facilities. The majority of the readings this week presented the theme of economics and the business aspect of sports. The NCAA should not have to provide collegiate athletes with a paycheck. Posnanski delivers a fair argument in his article, “The College Connection”, where he mentions how athletes receive several incentives for their participation in sport such as scholarships, room and board, and five-star facilities. NFL owners are some of the wealthiest people in the world today, yet people have to stretch their pockets and give money out of their hard-earned income to benefit the construction of these stadiums. I find it sad that taxpayers are forced to fund these stadiums because they rarely bring in enough revenue to benefit the surrounding communities. There are far more important things that taxpayer dollars could be used for such as education, poverty, and the environment. For example, in some cities, students are forced to use outdated resources, which consequently hold them back from grasping the knowledge to meet their full potential.
