College Writing Reflection Paper

Writing is a topic that I have always enjoyed in school. This year, College Writing I has been intriguing and a class that I always enjoyed going to. I enjoyed having a free write journal and answering prompts almost every day. I believe that it is a good way to practice my writing and get my brain flowing before class. I enjoyed writing the prompt when we got to describe something normal in a very stretched out and detailed way. It helped me to better use descriptive words. Doing the free write journals also helped me to try and meet length requirements, which is something I tend to struggle with. Once I get a length requirement I usually have a hard time meeting it and up stretching what I am saying. The free write journals helped me try and get my point across without rambling in the page limit. I believe that what I took away most from this class is citing works properly. In past classes I have learned this, but it never stuck with me until this year. I felt that I was taught how to cite different works well. I also learned resources, such as Purdue Owl, that I can look to if I need help. Doing the small activities where we practiced citing works and books was helpful. All of the constructive criticism on my projects help me understand where I can fix my writing. I now know that I should try to put more detail into my writing, work on what tense I write in, and focus on revising my paper to catch silly spelling or grammar mistakes. This class also helped me in my other classes. In most of my other classes we had writing projects where I could apply the skills I learned in College Writing l. Also, this semester being able to have individual conference times helped me to feel confident in my work. It helped me to see mistakes that I did not see when I was reading my own papers. I believe that I will take all of what I learned with my into College Writing

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Furthermore, learning how to cite the sources in my writing and its…

After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…

On August 29, 2016 I walked in to the Family Life building of Utah State University knowing that I was not going to be a fan of my first class – English 1010. I knew I would not like it because I had learned to hate writing for someone other than myself in my senior year of high school. I had a teacher who loved to make essays and papers bleed with red ink. She told us it was to improve our writing; what it really did was make me hate writing. Deanna Allred did not have the goal to grammatically correct us into submission; she wanted to show us our writing could be good and our writing was allowed to start out bad.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
