College Writing Failure

Improved Essays
As a college student, or student in general, it is very easy for me to second guess my abilities or become overwhelmed at the prospect of being graded on skills that seem difficult to grasp in writing, but I have managed to start college without these preeminent dispositions. Throughout high school, my very strict, magnet teachers forced me to step out my comfort zone enabling me to be more open about writing in general. Even though I am certainly far from perfect, without these experiences and realizations over the years, I would have found this and many other writing assignments daunting and nearly impossible. In my freshman year of high school, I undeniably doubted my writing skills due to the fact that even then my grammar and spelling were nearly horrific. When I wrote I was never able to find my voice, and …show more content…
I blamed this lack of confidence for the “D” I made on the final essay that stamped my first “C” on my report card. The failure left a bad impression on me about my writing. When I started my sophomore year and found out the essay topic, I did everything in my power to make the most of it and never made a bad grade on a paper ever again if I could help it. Therefore, I picked a topic that I was passionate about and was able to push through and made an overall “B” on my paper which was a vast improvement. The only thing that really held me back was my grammar. I will be the first to admit that I absolutely loathe grammar. Honestly, I would rather spend my time developing a good, meaningful paragraph that flows with information and expressive word usage than apply “adequate, Grade-A” grammar. Seemingly, I frequently have run-on sentences, abuse commas, and regrettably spell words wrong even though I pride myself in using creative vocabulary. With all my weaknesses in mind, I have to make sure I have a lot of people to look over my papers for me

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

Imagine a young girl, about three year’s old sitting in her wooden rocking chair surrounded by picture books. They are sprawled all over the floor, and here she sits and “reads” aloud to her stuffed animals. But, she doesn’t know how to read, so she makes the story up based on the pictures she sees in the book. Now imagine the same young girl, now she is five years old. She sits on a chair with crayons of every color, coloring books, and paper spread across the kitchen table.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Good grammar is important in writing from capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. I have experience writing a five page essay. I proofread it several times, turned it in and made a grade I was not expecting to get all because of bad grammar usage. It is ways to check for bad grammar such as getting a tutor to look over it, proofread, and looking over rules for…

During the course of my many semesters left here at Alvin College I really want to focus on writing more, and advancing with each semester one at a time. I have a lot of minute things that I need to work out in my writing before I get to the level I eventually would like to be at when I graduate. I still would like to improve my punctuation, as well as, some other characteristics of my writing; however, I feel I have made incredible strides since the beginning of the year. My main goal with writing in college is to look back on freshman year and put side by side the papers to how I am writing senior year and to be able to see how far I have come, and how much I have developed as a writer. I want to leave Alvin College going into the world as a confident writer, one that has accomplished the goals on my to-do list.…

Over the first several weeks of school I have had the rewarding experience of being involved with the fast-track English 111 class provided by my high school and local community college. I have gained experience in managing deadlines, juggling prompts, meeting various criteria, and learning what it truly is that makes writing both correct and brilliant. Coming into this class, I truly lacked a general understanding of proper writing. I wasn’t able to write in MLA format, let alone understand how to execute a process-analysis method, or correct sentence structure. In these past few weeks alone I feel that I have developed as a writer and overall student, know having at least a grasp, if not broader knowledge, on how to produce quality, college-equivalent writing that has exceeded me past an amateur level.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Even when I did have an English class we were not graded on a tough grading scale. I knew I had some issues with my grammar, and I was ready to work on it. I also did not know all of the ways that an author could manipulate me, and quickly realized that I am easily manipulated.…

Many believe that they can’t write, that writing is stupid, and it won’t be used in the “real world”. They can’t be any further from the truth. Writing is a 21st century skill that is essential to being successful in whatever post-secondary atmosphere students find themselves in. This study helped provide many students with confidence about their ability to write. The impact we have on students’ confidence will have a ripple effect on to another area where they feel less confident.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
