In completing the course English 112 at Robeson Community College, I have found myself with a new found understanding how to write various genres, and do them well. Newly, I have experienced the handling of opinion writing, research writing, and direct analyzation writing. These concepts greatly helped me achieve the knowledge of love in writing. This class had an overall positive affect on the individual I now am, and created a way in which I read an assignment, sit down, and promptly beginning work. In this class, aspects such as research, analyzation, and procrastination hit the closest to who I was before enrolling and completing this course.…
Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…
From Adolescence to Adulthood: Writing at the College Level Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses revision strategies in the journal College Composition and Communication. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles: “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers” (1980), “Between the Drafts” (1992), and finally, “the Novice as Expert” (2004) which she wrote alongside Laura Saltz. Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. Between the Drafts (1992) narrates Sommers’…
Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…
Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…
As a college student, or student in general, it is very easy for me to second guess my abilities or become overwhelmed at the prospect of being graded on skills that seem difficult to grasp in writing, but I have managed to start college without these preeminent dispositions. Throughout high school, my very strict, magnet teachers forced me to step out my comfort zone enabling me to be more open about writing in general. Even though I am certainly far from perfect, without these experiences and realizations over the years, I would have found this and many other writing assignments daunting and nearly impossible. In my freshman year of high school, I undeniably doubted my writing skills due to the fact that even then my grammar and spelling were nearly horrific.…
When I began English Composition One, I was a mediocre writer; however, this semester has unlocked my inner William Faulkner. I made a lot of careless mistakes in the form of writing, but that soon changed because my teacher really unlocked my potential and changed my confidence as a writer. I lacked organization, details, and consistency especially in my introductions. My introductions were stale and choppy, and if the subject was difficult, my introductions were vague. My writings were poor, but I have persevered and became an entirly different writer.…
At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…
Before I took the step into a college writing class we had already been drilled in high school by our English teacher Mr Gould. Noble High school really took writing and citing sources seriously, so some things I was taught in my college writing class wasn't really new to me. I feel as if Noble was preparing us for college, so we weren't lost. My senior year of high school, we were required to write an APA research paper and an MLA research paper on a historical topic of my choice. So when it comes to writing long papers i'm no stranger to it, it almost feels normal now and isn't that scary.…
Distorted Reflections We are the sum or our experiences. Finding out what type of writer you are is a journey. If you take a snapshot at different time during your development you can probably see the difference in how you right now verses how you wrote in the sixth grade. During that journey you discover what your capabilities are.…
Throughout my first semester at Virginia Tech I have learned a lot. As an incoming freshman, I was inexperienced in college level courses and writing. At the begging of the semester in communications class I wrote a goals memorandum, looking back at this I can tell how much I have improved and grown in writing because I have accomplished some of those goals. Through my best three assignments, introduction letter, speaker analysis, and Common Book Essay, I show growth towards my goals of preventing run on sentences, and staying on topic.…
It's always fun to write an essay about the meaning of writing. The chapter we read, called What Is “Academic” Writing? by L. Lennie Irvin really drill down the thoughts and guide us to what writing can be. I thought writing is a response. We write become we have a response or a reaction to something.…
College-level writing is a necessity to be able to reach some of the goals I have set for me, not only throughout my college days, but for my future career as well. I would like to go into politics some day, and as many know that requires a strenuous amount of writing if you plan on persuading people to vote for you. So the earlier I master writing the better off I will be in the future, when I have a big speech coming up, or maybe if I go into business as a corporate official need to make some statements. Either way, being able to write collegiately is a necessity no matter what route I take in fulfilling a successful and proper role in the writing side of my career. When someone gets to that level where they can type a paper with little to…
Before arriving at college, I had always taken yearlong English classes, which had a focus on a certain topic. I’m excited to see what the papers, topics and literature had expected of me over the upcoming semester. I was always assigned what to write, how long it had to be, even how many quotations or sources I had to use, therefore having more freedom to write sounded appealing to me. The homework assignments, peer reviews, mock interviews as well as the workshops have all contributed to my semester long improvement. Over the course of the fifteen-week semester, English 101 has encouraged me to consider new literary strategies, examine new genres and study new vocabulary, all which has helped broaden my writing skills.…
This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
