College Tribes vs. High School Tribes; Are they the same? We all remember those “tribes” we were part of in high school, we mostly saw them during lunch. The prep or popular kids, those were usually the ones with money and would complain about how daddy didn’t buy them the new I phone. The jocks, those were the loudest ones, wearing their jersey not only to show school pride, but to let everyone know who they were. The gamers, those weren’t in the cafeteria as much, but you could always spot one they were almost always on the computer playing video games, or in the library. Everyone in the tribe dressed around the same, talked the same, and even in some cases our tribes were all from the same race or social class. I remember I had two very different tribes in high school, and it depended where I lived and the area I was growing up in. My first tribe was preps, yes I know me! What a shocker, well I lived in an area were lots of middle class people lived, except I lived in the neighborhood trailer park. But I still had to try and fit in with my tribe. I remember I would go to the thrift store and try and find Abercrombie or flitch shirts, to fit in with the tribes that I guess you can say were “offered” at the school. Plus I went to a school where our three button polo shirts had to be tucked into our, khaki or navy blue pants (they couldn’t be jeans) with a belt holding everything together. I started talking like them, acting like them, dressing into the same brand clothes as them. And all so I could “fit in” with my tribe. My second tribe was the complete opposite, it was a “gangster” tribe. That one was bad, getting associated with the wrong people, dressing and talking like them. I had to change my ways although we thought the same, and talked the same you still always have to make changes to completely fit in. First, the “natural helpers”, in high school being your very proud ASB. We have that in college which is our student Government, they’re just not as direct as they are in high school. Then there is your “computer genius”, we call them the “gamers”. I am pretty sure if you asked them about any game on the computer they would know every cheat code in the book regarding that game. The “theater kids”, we well I should say I, don’t really know where that tribe in college is, I am guessing the theater I honestly have no idea. Although, society no matter where you go will always have tribes. No matter if we are done with both high school and college we still have
