Once someone is in the Thresher, they are standing upon a platform chained to the ground and sent through numerous painful experiences to cause a person to finally pull the rope to end the test. Unbeknownst to the recruits they do not know that the test should not be completed. Throughout the Thresher scene Kip is determined to make it all the way through the test in order to prove his worth for his father, he even goes as far to throw the rope out of his hand, “I 'm not pulling the rope!” he shouted. “You bastards, I 'm not pulling the rope!” (277). Although even with his best efforts, he still pulled out of the test before it was over, due to interference from outside sources.
