Examples of this are the Civil Rights Movement lead by leaders such aa Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X, President Lincoln abolishing slavery throughout the entirety of the U.S, and finally more recently, same-sex marriage. All of the moments in history listed had opposition, and in some cases still do. Each side calling the other ignorant and naïve. Some use it as an excuse to ignore the worst parts of ourselves and others, or to place blinders to certain things in the background. This is justified to an extent. People cope with the harshness of the world around in different and complicated ways. There still needs to be the acknowledgment of the ugly and hateful. Even those that experience the worst of society, experience trauma, use this to cope. Both are forms of ignorance. “Trauma affects how students learn,” (Byron), teachers and students alike need to at the very least be aware of this, and tolerant of those that have gone through such trauma. To be ignorant of this is to not only rub salt in the wound of those affected by the various types of trauma but also, tell them that these reactions are not
