In general, there are more semester-system universities than quarter-system universities. Therefore, most of my old friends attend universities that operate on the semester system and can meet and travel during the winter and spring break. UC Davis’s winter break only has sixteen days and spring break has just a week. Other semester-system universities usually have a thirty-day winter break and a one-week spring break that is at different time than UC Davis’s. Traveling with childhood friends during breaks is a good way to maintain harmonious friendships. However, I have fewer chances to do that because of short winter and spring breaks. Even though part of two systems’ schedules can overlap, I always have to join them late and leave early. My friends and I are all disappointed about that. On the contrary, the summer break is too long. UC’s summer break starts in early June and ends in late September. It is an advantage of quarter system since I can have more time to relax or take summer sessions, but is also a disadvantage. If I use a summer break to take summer session II that begins in early August and ends in early September, I will get bored in September because all semester-attending friends go back to their universities. I took BIS 2AB in the 2014 Winter and Spring quarter. Thus I had to take BIS 2C in the 2014 Fall quarter. To be honest, I was not able to remember anything about genetic material and ecosystems that I had learned in BIS 2AB after the three-month vacation. Moreover, I forgot a large number of specialized vocabulary because I did not have chances to use these in everyday life during the three-month break. Therefore, I had to spend a lot of time recalling and reviewing knowledge that I learned three months ago in the first week of 2014 Fall quarter.
